Diesel is not a worth it if you only do 5K p.a.

Something like a 1.6 avensis or 1.4 corolla will get you decent mpg.

If you're only doing 100 miles a week, how hard on petrol can the vectra be?

Im planning to do a bit more then that ,but the vectra really getting heavy on petrol i say about 12-14 litre/100 km

Have you considered getting the vectra fixed? It should be doing better than that.
What year is it? What sort of driving are you doing?

How are you calculating your fuel consumption?

Thanks your advice i will go to a different mechanic,i calculate buy filling up full ,go down half ,record ,then doit again, and record and from the two i get the miles and litre,i tried other way like fill the tank full then go to close to minimum, but im getting shocking numbers

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 73,520 ✭✭✭✭colm_mcm

How many miles were you getting out of a full tank?

The 2003 1.8 Vectra (125PS) I had was terrible on fuel and was a common complaint with this version. They replaced that engine with a much better VVT version (140PS) the following year. I was only getting around 30mpg on it and as low as 25 mpg in city driving!

Diesels are not overly great on fuel driving around town either. They come into their own on long drives. You could end up spending thousands to buy a diesel car in order to save a few hundred on fuel bills.

Yes the 1.8 vectra very bad just did a check to half tank it get me 135 miles ,i done it twice ,so something not right

    4-5k but less it better

A good 05 avensis with low miles would be in your budget. I have gotten my 1.6 avensis over 40 mpg on long runs. Got 498 miles between fillup and the light coming on once but that is down to me driving like a grandad and using expensive oil (mobil one in the engine and gearbox), having a decent brand of tyres and never missing a service and always buy topaz fuel. I normally get 450-460. 70% of this is on national roads. I spent a weekend in dublin last year and had the fuel light on after 380 miles which was a bit sickeining.

Remove any of these and the fuel consumption will start to go up.

Id only change if you were thinking of doing it anyway... you wont be saving money, spending 4-5k to save peanuts...

12-14 litres per 100km is fairly shocking in fairness!

14 litres per 100 km? My friend gets that in his Opel Vectra too!

    (2.8 V6 Insignia :D)

Get the car checked out by a mechanic. The only car I'd say is close enough in terms of this consumption is a BMW E39 520iA - that's heavier and with an automatic.

If changing OP, you should know that the vectra doesnt hold its value well on the second hand market as well as the avensis. You might not get as much as you would think for the vectra. You probably know this already but just want to be sure.

The Avensis is pretty reliable, but if buying look out for noisy gearbox bearings, a common fault in 03-09 Avensis.

€5k will get you a facelifted 2006 Avensis:

the facelift has a bigger boot, indicators in the wing mirror and above all else a nicer set up with the trip computer.

OP one downside i forgot to mention is that a front armrest is rare.

How does it have a bigger boot? Its the same car.
The rear seats fold down alright

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,331 ✭✭✭toyotaavensis

    facelift is longer

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 51,363 ✭✭✭✭bazz26

How does it have a bigger boot as they didn't really change much on it? The facelift got a split folding rear seat as standard alright but sure the boot is the same size and dimension?

I have a buddy with and 08 saloon, I have an 03 and when I drive to the course you can see the extra room putting the clubs in.

I am not the only person who has noticed this. See first review:

    facelift is longer

Its the same car and all body panels bar the front wings are identical so i doubt that.
Bumper might stick out a bit more at the front (Dont even think it does) but its the same car.

Basically they added indicators to wing mirrors, revised the bumpers, added folding seat, changed seat fabric, added mp3 and avls to the radio, moved trip computer, changed steering wheel, slightly changed the front and rear lights but thats the height of it.

All they changed on the rear of the facelifted model is slightly different light cluster and bumper. Overall shape of the car remained the same.

I dont think that what we are talking about now is any use to the OP so I think it is best to leave it here. I will measure the boot the next day I go golfing and measure mine and let you have the numbers.
