Buying a beer growler?

    Hey lads and ladies,

I was wondering, where is the best place to buy a beer growler?

More and more pubs are doing growler fills now and even some offies so wanted to invest in one (mostly so I can bring a growler of Foam and Fury back to Athlone for Christmas!).

Where is selling them and where is the best value for money? Looking for a 2litre / 4 pint(imperial) / 72oz(imperial)/whatever growler.

I got mine in Sweetmans. 4pints for about €19 /20 orignally. Then 12 per fill.

I checked out the one in L.Mulligans too and think it was only 3 pints and price depended on the beer. But it does look like a nicer bottle.

Think Sweetmans do a discounted one with a beoir membership

AFAIK there's only two places doing them, Sweetmans and Mulligans, the Sweetmans one is larger than the Mulligans.

As I mentioned, there was a sign up in BD saying "We Fill Growlers", so I assume they'll do both types.

Strange one is, I was in WJK on Saturday, and they DON'T fill the Mulligan's one, which I found extremely weird.

Taphouse in Ranelagh does them but their selection isn't great.

    That is very odd!

Does anyone know if its just the BD out of the CG that do refills? I would too like some foam and fury!

Saw that on the recent newsletter. Think it's €1 off a refill and starts next week.

Also, would a growler of F&F be expensive? It works out around €8 a pint so for a Sweetmans growler it would be 30 odd euro at pub prices. Do they give a discount?

If you wanted a smaller option, you might be able to use one of the swing top bottles that the Fran Well barrel aged stout came in and get 1L of beer.

Good plan, the LMG growler is literally a glass swingtop bottle.

    Is the Sweetmans one plastic?

Hollands in Bray do growler fills too. They occasionally sell brewdog growlers too

I have one of these, but I've never used it. Was bought more of a souvenir than anything else.

As an alternative you could of course buy a large bottle of Hopus and use that.

Not cheap though, and you'd have the awful task of drinking 2 litres of Hopus.

Sorry for the silly question but what does this look like on the other side? Is there a handle?

the reason I ask is because I own 2 growlers. One from Sweetmans and another I got on holidays in Spain which looks like this:
    Growler%20Room%20Austin%20Texas%20Growler%20Filling%20Station%20Personalized%20Custom%20Growlers.jpg

I'd strongly advise against getting that second type. It's a really awkward shape and weighs nearly 2kg empty. The one from sweetmans is much more practical.

yes there is, it's a part of the bottle, not a metal separate.

I'll take a pic of mine side-on in a few mins and post it up

    edit.

    here it is

So the Mulligan's ne is 3 pints and the sweetmans is 4 (I'd say it's barely 4 if it's 4 at all)?

    How much do they cost?

I know in mullinag's it's a kinda rental thing where you can bring in the empty and they take it and give you a clean one which they steralise properly or something?

Do sweetmans do the same or is it just an outright buy it and you wash it yourself deal (the effort of hot water and soap in a bottle :pac:).

3.7. It's lined to 1.89L but they fill it up and it holds 2.1L.

Got a sweetmans one today meself, had a couple of pints and there's defo enough for a couple more.

it's a wash it yourself deal, barman said just give it a "good clean". Gonna keep mine for Homebrew beer, have a handy gallon ready to go and bottle the rest

Is the label on it designed into the bottle or is just paper?

I.e. will the label come off after one wash? :)

Yes, it's printed on the glass.

    Brilliant!!!

Was thinking of buying one for someone as a present, but wouldn't have been as good if the label just washed off. :)

So, does anywhere else sell them besides Sweetman's and Mulligan's?

Any lads, because none of you answered yet, how much do the above charge for the growler itself?

Sweetmans is 19 or 20 for a new growler + a fill. Don't know if the just sell the growler on it's own

Decent value for the growler and 4 pints in fairness.
