So I'm in first year doing arts in NUIG and haven't been coping at all. I've fallen behind on everything and I've missed most of my tutorials because I was too scared to go as I hadn't got my assignments done. I've missed most of my lectures too, some of the time its because I spend the whole day in the library trying to catch up on assignments and other times it's because I cant get up and that applies for evening lectures too (my sleeping pattern has become bizzare since coming here).

Basically I'm a total disaster. Instead of being focused on the course which is the reason I'm here, my mind has been totally preoccupied with other things but in all fairness its hard to leave home, come to a totally new place where u know nobody and everything seems so intimidating and be expected to just immediately have everything together. Everything seems to move so fast here.

The transition from being told what to do and spoon fed by teachers to independent learning has not been a smooth one for me. Especially with Arts you have to do so much by yourself. I suppose it would have helped if I'd gone to my tutorials :( I'm going to fail my exams because I have no idea whats going on in the course. I want to get my act together but everything has piled up on me now and exams are very soon. I don't know what to do with myself. Is it too late to pass the year?

Have you talked to any of your tutors/lecturers or contacted them by email?
    Contact your first year advisor?
I know how you feel. Im in 1st arts and on second time in college. let my self get overwhelmed the last time but you have to contact the relevant people in the college be they your lecturers/tutor/first year advisor etc

What subjects are you doing? Not too late at all but contact lecturers, the counselling service if you are struggling so much.
What do your parents know of how your doing?

About talking to the tutors, what would I even say? I haven't gone to any of the tutorials so I don't think they're going to be too understanding :/ I'd say someone doing podiatry has about the same level of knowledge on this course as I do! My mother keeps telling me to make sure I study and pass my exams bcoz its very expensive to repeat, I can just imagine the look of horror on her face when the inevitable failures happen! :(
What exactly does the academic adviser do?

What's the worst that can happen? You have to pay for summer repeats and spoil your holidays. It's not really expensive to repeat the exams in summer - I'm open to correction, but I thought it was €200 total?
Pick a couple of modules, study your arse off - you still have time to ace them - and leave the other couple of modules 'til the summer.
Sometimes going to people for advice and support is helpful and necessary, but if the only problem is that you've not done any work all semester, be sure you're not just using the "talking about it" as further procrastination.

Repeating a year is expensive, but the exams are 195 or 200 euro, no matter how many you have. Talk to services, perhaps defer these exams until August. Go hell for leather next semester and then you have a few weeks in the Summer to focus solely on Semester 1 exams. Many, many people in Arts especially (myself included) have gone through numerous sessions of August exams. I had 4 in 2nd year!

Everyone who posted here is right! Pick one or two modules, study like hell. Repeat exams in the summer. Talk to your lecturers and tutors. It's only one semester! You can definitely turn this around!

If you can't cope with Arts... well seriously, should you even be in college? Arts now is nothing to what was asked of you 30 years ago. The standard is now frankly abysmal.

1st year arts? Chill the bean man! Your exams are probably MCQ! I'm final year at the moment and in 1st year I could go a month without entering the college. You'll be fine just do your study now, cram the night before and perfecto ;) your meant to enjoy yourself in 1st year so stop stressing 8-)

Go talk to your tutors and lecturers, and your course advisor. Moving to college was simeltaneously the most exciting and terrifying time of my life, and I doubt I was the only one. Explain how you've been feeling, and how you don't think you're coping. They'll be able to advise you and help you out. There's always a solution if you ask for it.
