I am stuck on 4.1.2 and it's buggy as hell so I basically want to upgrade it and see what I can do with a rooted phone.

First thing you should do is go over to xda and go into your devices section. Really, you should put cwm mod on your phone. All the instructions are on the xda forum.

OmniROM is my current install. Very few bugs and being improved on a daily basis.

Get Cyanogenmod if available for your phone and then:

    1. Install FasterGPS
    2. Install Prey with admin privileges
    3. Install NTPSync (root required as well)
    4. Install BetterBatteryStats (root to see more info) and check what is draining the battery, maybe it's worth to make some changes to syncing/screen timeout/email accounts/whatever
    5. Replace boot animation if you wish
