Lodging to An Post savings

I'm a student and I work part time. I have a current account and debit card but I use a post office savings book to store money to pay rent, bills and some college expenses.

I like the straightforwardness of the post office book and it feels more secure. However, I dislike carrying cash to the PO. It would also be handy if those lodgements could appear on my current account statement, just for my records.

When lodging money at the post office, could the cashier take the money from my debit card rather than cash? I tried using a cheque recently but it didn't clear for 12 working days
