200,000 mile service

    Hello all,

My mark 4 Golf diesel is not far away from it's 200,000 mile service. I have had no service costs for the past 2 years aside from oil and filters but I do hear the odd knock now so I am guessing there is some bushing work to get done.

With my Haynes manual off hiding on me, I am wondering what needs doing? There are somethings I could do myself but I know that the timing belt is due (last done at 151,000).

I would like for the engine to get a good going over, injector cleaning, timing perfected as some starts can be prolonged and smokey (though would the timing belt change do that?). I would like a switch in the cabin for me to switch on the pre-heat as that has never worked brilliantly since I got the temp sensor changed, maybe a nice DIY.

I would also like a complete head to toe inspection with every little thing looked at, I suppose that is the NCT which is passed quite comfortably but if I could get a list of what is going, about to go and totally gone on the car, then I would love that.

Does anyone know of a good independent garage in south Meath and North Kildare? I guess George Dalton is a go to guy here, always seems to know his stuff. That said, I am a student and by perfect definition I have very little extra money to wiggle around. What needs doing will get done but I need to keep an eye on costs.

What else should I look at and get done? I know it is going to be one of the more expensive services and I know a lot of stuff is out of my DIY league, tis life =)

There is a UK based TDI that reached 450,000 miles last year so I will aim for that :p

    Thanks!

    EDIT:

I am thinking of fitting uprated bits like bushings as and when the car needs them, I am wondering what you guys think of that too. For instance, the front shock mount seems to need regular work and I think that is the knocking that I am hearing. If so, that is my third set in 50,000 miles. Can they be uprated?

What is the engine code? You may not be due a timing belt change yet.

I'd doubt if it needs any engine work if running well. I've over 200k miles on my allroad with no engine work bar the usual wear and tear and timing belts. Timing shouldn't be an issue as it's all electronic.

The knocking noise is most likely a ball joint/bushing. They're not that easy to diagnose. You really need to get a crowbar in there and check for movement.

It's a good idea to get it checked over by a good mechanic as a preventative measure.

    Howdy,

    AGR.

AGR is fine for at least 60k so I wouldn't worry about the belt just yet.

It is running well alright, but cant help but think it could get a seeing to after 13 years and improve something =P

I have good experience getting bushings changed along with shock mounts, not by myself but in terms of having to get them done, The car seems to eat them up relatively spealing. I wonder would those polyurethane replacements be of any use?
