The cheapest legit option would be Microsoft's Home Use Program, but only some employers will be enrolled in this

    http://www.microsofthup.com

Cost is only about €15, a bit extra if you want it on media.

    Ask your employer's IT Dept.

For businesses buying a number of licenses, there is the option of second hand volume licenses from insolvent businesses

Doesn't have Office 2013 yet though.

If there is only one of the office programs that you actually use, you can just buy that individual programs.

Otherwise there's no low cost version of Office 2013 that I know of. Sterling 184 (€220) for the home and business license key from amazon uk.

There are some more affordable old versions such as Office 2007 small business available on amazon.co.uk, though a number of the 3rd party sellers on amazon are likely also questionable.

    Or Libreoffice or Google apps.
The nasty commercial restrictions are on Microsoft's software.

Is this due to the Microsoft Audit forms that have blotted out the sun this week?

Once upon a time I'd have suggested looking at upgrade options. It used to be cheaper to buy works and upgrade it to office.

If you need 2013 here's the options
    https://office.microsoft.com/en-ie/buy/
    vs.
    https://office.microsoft.com/en-gb/buy/

Try abroad in case you can save a few shekels on the currency

Older versions might be cheaper but remember OEM versions can't be moved to a different PC and proving you own a license for second hand sw could be a nightmare because having a COA and box probably isn't enough !

Does Office 365 have office installed on the machine too or is it just within a browser?

Re Office 365: depends on the version that you subscribe to. The expensive version (€19.00 + VAT per person per month for enterprise, €12.30 + Vat for small-med business) provides a user license for the desktop version of Office.

If you qualify you can take advantage of MS Direct access, IT companies, accountants and the like. Gives you 5 full office licences (and every other MS product) for 200 quid, but you need to renew every year.
