Voluntary safety tests

Voluntary safety tests are now available at all CVR testing centres. A voluntary safety test is a roadworthiness test, other than a CVR test, carried out on one or more test items. Therefore no CRW is issued as a result of a voluntary safety test, no levy is payable on these tests and they do not affect a vehicle’s test anniversary date. As well as CVR vehicles, a voluntary safety test can also be carried out on vehicles owned by the Gardai or Defence Forces.

This seems like a very good idea, apart from the suspicion that if anything presented is in poor nick the results will go straight to RSA HQ attracting unwanted attention.

How will test centres cope with doing free tests, surely it will cost them to do these?

Someone must be paying test centre to do them. Perhaps government are paying a small fee. Don't forget, the have just started taking a huge levy off all test fees.

Just read the op again and it doesn't say the tests are free. It appears to state that you now have the option of visiting the test centre for an inspection at the time other than when test is due. i. e. If you wanted a diagnoses on worn bushes etc. It just says no levy will apply but that doesn't mean the test centres won't have fees for this.

Vehicle and operator data will be fed back to the RSA.

The test results are treated the same as if it were the actual DOE but there doesn't appear to be any way to revoke a DOE.

The results from voluntary tests and regular tests will be used in building the operator's profile on the RSA's risk register.

Then they can come to you and break down the door to search your premises to locate your vehicle maintainance records if they exist.

If they don't exist or are not up to the RSA's expectations you can expect a criminal record and fine.

Seems fair enough to me.....
