Hi, I've recently just heard bow hunting was illegal in Ireland! Just wondering if that is just for protected species or for all animals?

It is against the law to shoot any animal with a bow in Ireland, doesn't differentiate between protected species and vermin

No problem, I can't link to any legislation on it because I'm on my phone. I'm sure someone more knowledgeable will be along soon with the exact legislation on it

Neither UK nor the Republic of Ireland permits shooting live game with ANY kind of bow - long, compound or cross.

The laws in UK are easy to find, but those in the RoI are not so easy to find, but trust me, they ARE there.

On the other hand, the RoI has a very fine tradition of target archery in the two main areas of the sport - target and field.

If you look over on the dedicated ARCHERY forum of this site, no doubt one of the posters over there will put you right.

    We've talked about this before...
And some of those threads link off to yet more threads and contain long detailed discussions of why it's illegal and what laws are broken by it.

TL;DR version? No, it's illegal. Don't do it. Thread closed.
