Work looking for a third opinion?

Hi, asking for a friend of mine, she is currently out on sick certs from her job for about two months, her job requested that she get checked by their doctor about two weeks ago, which she did and that doc agreed with the first doctors opinion that she was right to be on sick leave, now her manager has informed her that head office were making her go for a third opinion, this is really stressing her out as she is afraid that she might lose her job over something that is not her fault despite working there for a decade.

My question is this, how often can her work place make her go to a new doctor for a new opinion despite their doctor agreeing with her own gp barely two weeks ago?

If it's in her contract that they can request her attendance at either a doctor of their choosing or a company doctor then they are within their rights AFAIK.

Also, although I can imagine it is stressful for your friend and you don't want to make things worse, she can be sacked for not being able to perform her duties no matter how many doctors agree about her illness. So if it were me I would be inclined to be as cooperative as possible with my employers and keep communication open at every opportunity. Perhaps she might also discuss alternative working arrangement such as home working. The more she can be seen to proactively look for solutions the better for her.

While you are correct from reading the OP it appears that the person in question attended the Company Doctor when requested. The company have now asked her to attend a new Company doctor.

The question is can they do this ? In effect can they keep asking the OPs friend to attend multiple company doctors until they (the company) get the answer they want.

Yes that's what I said. They can ask her to attend a doctors of their choosing and can request this as often as they see fit as long as it is in the contract or company handbook.
