Small plane circling overhead

Don't know if this is appropriate for this thread, or if it's one of those "how long is a piece of string" questions, but I thought the air-heads (mean that in the best possible way) here might be able to suggest an answer.

There was a small plane (I guess a Cessna) circling the area close to where I live this morning. It would have been the Dunmanway area of west cork, and I noticed that it was doing figure-8 manoeuvres. It would do 6-7 figure8s then fly off to another area (within sight) and do the same thing. If I was to guess a height, I would think it was under 1500ft.

Any suggestions as to what this was about? Ariel photography? Pilot Training? Newly awarded PPL drunk with power??

TBH, it was a little annoying, even indoors. Kinda like a fly buzzing around.

It could have been the Air Corps, the Gardai or some private plane out doing a survey or photography work or just someone learning how to fly.

Could have been pretty much anything, really.

If you're really curious, check out the LiveATC archives for Cork and/or Shannon around the time that you heard it and you might hear it talking to ATC and it might have mentioned what it was up to.

Sounds a lot like an Air Corps Cessna. If it was dark coloured and notably loud there's a good chance that's what it was. You'd commonly see the same thing over Galway and I assume other places on a Monday as a form of top cover for cash escorts. Or it could be a bog patrol. Are there bogs in the vicinity?
