blockwork on 2nd floor kicked off and we need to make final decisions on changes we were thinking about. right now hot press is 1.2m wide by 2m long. is this a decent size for a hot press (bearing in mind there may be no cylinder in this press now but we still wanted a hot press to keep linen, towels etc..) Door into this press would be on the 1.2m wall and in the plans it shows shelving running down the 2m length wall and across 1.2m of the back wall. builder is saying its too narrow to have shelving running down the length. And proposed we make the room 1.2m x 1.2m and make bathroom bigger. Bathroom is already 2.6m by 3.05m

Any advise? Im crap at imaging the size of the room:o

1.2x2m is a massive size for a hot press! Just how many towels are you planning on storing?
It really depends on what you are putting in the room, hot water cylinder, maybe the manifold for the heating or ventilation system?
Mark out the size of the room on the ground to give you a better idea of the space, then make your decision.

A cyclinder may be going in it, not 100% yet. it was 3m x 1.2m to start with and we decided to take 1m out to fit shower in it from the bathroom side which brought it to 2m x 1.2m
we wanted a walk in hot press that would have a wall of shelving running along the 2meter wall. Its for towels, bedding, duvets, pillows and whatever bits and bobs we'll be gathering over the years (suitcases, winter coats etc..) that we don't want clogging up the bedroom wardrobes with.

Our hot press is 1.2m wide full height and 45cm deep. Five slatted shelves from knee height to the ceiling (shoes, boots, manifold, pumps, expansion vessel below lowest shelf).
Ours is located in the utility room with full height out-opening wardrobe-type doors and 15cm gap between doors and shelves to allow for stuff on hangers.
The shelves are frequently full with the normal weekly wash - 2adults and 4kids.
No long-term storage - except maybe some sheets on the top shelf ('cos my mother says they need longer in the hotpress!).
No complaints yet - so I think it was sized just right for our household.

I think our hotpress size compares to what your builder is proposing - namely shelves on the 1.2m end wall only.

Our utility room is long narrow - but I reckon the walkway needs to be minimum of 80cm to allow for elbow and maneuver - our walkway is 100cm.
In your case - the 80cm will be taken by the swing of the in-opening door - frame and architrave will probably mean little chance for shelves on the side.

To be honest - I'd suggest you go one step further than your builder - go with 1.2m x 0.6m and out-opening door (central on the 1.2m) and use your hallway as the "loading" area.
Your bathroom (even with the newly added shower) already sounds plenty big. Perhaps the space saved can become something useful in whatever other rooms might be adjacent.

My hot press is .94M by 2.6M We have no immersion. We have a rad and an electric 200W heater for summer heating. We have 4 slatted shelves 30cm wide running along the 2M wall. Hanging rail bars running under these. One narrow wall is floor to ceiling wire pull out baskets. It stores all our linen and more, including ironing board and iron. There is a 34cm space running the length of the room which is quite adequate for access. I thing your space is fine if you do not have an immersion tank.

Why not have the room accessible from both the outside and the bathroom. That way people in the bathroom have direct access to towels. More than likely with the dimesnions given it'd up with the same shelf space using that method as opposed to your original one.
