    A job ad without salary information is like a CV without a name on it.

    I will not read such an ad. I filter them out right at the search page. It’s not that I’m following the age-old business advice that people do jobs for the sole motivation of collecting their pay – if I truly believed that, I might be a lot better off in material terms, but I’d also be dealing in illegal narcotics because the profit margins there are so much higher. No, I check for the salary information for two reasons. Granted, the first is because the salary is actually important – it may not be the dominating factor in my decision (for example, my new role involves a pay cut, but it also brings other benefits to the package that make up for that), but it is a factor nonetheless. Without good reason, you really shouldn’t take pay cuts to get the next job. Parity would be the lowest you should go, that’s only common sense – forget being used to a set quality of life, think what the next company will think if you had to take a 10% paycut to get your last job.

    A lot to quote, but that's just an example of why I bypass a job post. I'm sure it doesn't just relate to Engineering, but other professions also.

    You have a valid point of view.

    But.....

    You are chosing to walk away from companies that have simply not put any thought into their adds, perhaps they have a poor contracted recruiter. But that is not the sum total of a company, they could be a great place to work once you engage with the hiring manager or other functions.

    I would equate a candidate skipping such adds, because a salary is not listed as being similar to an employer that always bins CVs where the candidate do not have a degree, missing out on the diversity of non-traditionally educated candidates, in the same way as the candidate misses out on opportunities in companies that may not list salaries.

    (Of course this is industry dependent and I also enjoy the salary/ package negotiation, companies that do not post a set salary are sometimes open to very creative compensation packages)

    The Salary or lack of in an advertisement is one small issue in the grand scheme of things. A job advertisement describes not only the role, but the Company, as my CV should describe me to the Company. If a Company can't put any effort into writing an ad, then yes I'm potentially shooting myself in the foot by walking, but why should I give them my effort regardless of how good I might be as an employee or how great they may be to work for.

    I suppose my point was that HR in a particular organisation is often not representative of the overall organisation.

    In large organisations where HR is often centralized and sometimes remote from the hiring manager (Recruitment is often an outsourced service) In small organisations, HR expertise can be almost non existent, adds written by non-HR professionals.

    So your expectations, while reasonable, may be a little high for some companies, and you can add a lot of other errors and omissions to most job adverts on top of the salary omission.

    Only you can determine the effort/risk that you are willing to put into searching for a new role and how you target this search is up to you. As the saying goes, you sometimes have to kiss a lot of Frogs before you find a Prince.

    Can be frustrating as well. A few friends have gotten down to discussing salary details after multiple interviews only to walk away when the position was offering much less than what they are currently on.

    when I was looking for a job if I skipped over every job that didn't post a salary, i'd be at home playing xbox in my underpants for the past 5 years. definitely annoying but can't be black & white on the issue.
