Do you have to give notice if you don't intend on renewing your contract?

I have 30 days notice on a short term working contract. Do I have to give notice if I do not intend to sign a new one if/when it is offered or can I just simply refuse to sign the new one and cease work on my termination date?

Surely it would be in your own interests to raise the issue with your employer, so that you can close off on whatever you're working on and arrange a handover if necessary ... otherwise you're very unlikely to get a good reference from them.

You won't need to give official written notice, but I'd definitely be discussing the matter with them at least a month in advance of your contract end date.

I am actively seeking work and would prefer to keep things under the radar if at all possible

Well they know when your contract is up and they know there is the possibility that they will loose you and they'd be foolish not to assume that you are looking, so what's to loose?

Would you be willing to sign a new contract if you don't get another job? Remember, just cos you're on a temp contract doesn't mean you have to stay there for it's entire duration: like all employees you can resign at any time, not just at the end of a contract.

I'd not say a word, unless there were bridges that I didn't want to burn.

30 days notice is stipulated in my contract. It's unlikely that I will renew (and I probably would have been gone sooner had it been shorter) but as you say I don't want to leave myself between a rock and a hard place

If you're on a fixed term contract that is ending, you have absolutely no requirement to give any kind of notice whatsoever. If the company want to keep you on, they will offer you a new contract (they'll call it an extension but it's a completely new contract) with good time. If you only have 30 days left on the contract and haven't heard from the company as to a new contract, it's unlikely you will be kept on.

So, in essence, if you haven't told your company your staying on and they haven't approached you about it, the understanding will be you're finished up at the end of the month.
