My bike was stolen today from college and I was wondering if it is possible to claim it back on the college's insurance? It cost 1200euro and the bikes were recently moved to a location out of view with no cameras. The thief used bolt cutters.

    Thanks.

Ok thanks. Can you explain why it doesn't fall under public liability?

Public liability does not cover inanimate objects sorry.

Also sorry for your loss its terrible to have something taken from you but unfortunately you'd be wasting your time going down that route did you see if the thief passed any cameras with the bike surely the exits are covered? This would be your only recourse and possible means of an outcome .

Did you speak to campus security?

Once, it used to be the case that bicycle theft could be claimed against one's ordinary home policy as items occasionally removed from the house. It is my understanding that many insurance companies updated their home insurance policies to exclude liability for bicycles.

However, it would be worth checking the terms of your home policy, or your parents' home policy, to see if the loss should be indemnified.

unless its specifically stated on your policy and believe me you would know this if you took the cover , I'm paying 200 euro extra for this type of cover on my policy. Other wise it would only be covered for theft in the house garage .

I go to Colaiste Dhulaigh, it's an absolute kip. They don't have the exits covered with cameras. Campus security (if they can be called that) are useless. They didn't even report it, I had to walk to the nearest Garda station to report it myself.

A camera inside the college did get a single picture of the thief with the bike through a window as he was leaving, but all it got was the back of his head.

I've lost two bikes in two weeks, to the value of 1900 euro and I'm still paying off the last one. I think I may have learned my lesson, I will insure my next bike.

    Thanks again for the replies.

What type of lock are you using?

I was using this one, apparently it's no match for bolt-cutters.

Gardai can only take a formal complaint from the injured party only in these type of cases so you had/have to do it yourself.

Those cable locks are worthless, he probably didn't even need bolt cutters. Get a U-lock for your next bike, and a heavy chain as well if you're going to lock it in a high risk area like a college. The rule of thumb is to spend 10% the cost of the bike on locks.

As said above OP don't skimp when it comes to security for your bike. Spending £15 on securing a 1000E bike is a false economy. If funds permit, buy a cheapy bike to do your college commute and keep your next "good" bike for your evening/weekend spins.

Yeah I'm getting a new bike for less than 200. I was an idiot to spend so much on a bike for commuting.

An idiot no but its a pity you cant securely leave a good bike and expect to find it intact after a couple of hours ,here's wishing nothing but badness on the bell end that took it.

the general rule of Thumb is to spend 10% of the value of the bike on the Lock so a €1200 bike should have a lock worth about €120 on it. The cable lock you used probably didn't even need cutters to get it off.

Its a terrible shame but you need to go to extreme measures to protect your bike these days.

Check local cameras in your area, report to gardai, double check the college footage, look around the area for clues, Never give Up,
This thief should be brought to Justice,
    Best of Luck.
