    Hi there,

    I'm really really stuck here:

I recently bought a new house and want to switch my internet and phone to Sky, however they need a UAN number to do this:

There is an Eircom phone there but Sky need the UAN number to change the line.

Eircom said if there is no account then there is no UAN number - I asked the previous owner, he said he has destroyed all previous docmentation belonging to the house.

I'm completely stuck and I can't go any longer without phone and broadband, help will be very much appreciated.

    Thanks in advance

It doesn't sound like the line is active? Is there a dial tone?

If not you need to call Eircom to activate the line.

Thanks Magic Marker for the response

Does it cost to activate the line do you know?

Also I can't check if there is a dial tone as I've no phone to check with (i know that sounds stupid but awaiting Sky to send one out once I provide the UAN number)

Think it costs about €25 to activate the line assuming no engineer call out is required, which doesn't sound like it would be necessary in your case, but Eircom might try and tie you into a contract as part of the activation.

Well one would assume they can but in my experience a lot of phone companies just tell people to contact Eircom to activate the line and then come to them with the UAN. But I suppose that was back when contracts weren't usually used for line rental only.

They are suppose to be able to activiate/install new lines on behalf customers now, other the customer will be tied into a contract with eircom for 12 months.

If the phone line isn't active, Sky should be able to have it activated, there shouldn't be a UAN for an inactive line

Just spoke to Eircom and they wouldn't activate the line as a once off payment, they said they will only do it if I sign into a 12 month contract, which is their loss as I would have paid a once off payment to get it.

Now I'll speak to Sky....... hopefully I'll get there eventually.

I think you should report that behaviour by Eircom to Comreg. IMO what they're engaging in is blackmail.

Unfortunately not - I had to sign up to Eircom 12 month contract

It's either that or have previous line owner call Eircom and request old UAN number, if that is the case you'll probably have no luck if your renting.

Best of luck, hope you have better success than I did.
