An intoxicated Mayor and Acting Village Manager of Monticello, New York, handcuffed, alternating between threatening and police officers in an effort to bully his way to lenient treatment after arrested for impaired driving. Jenkins curses repeatedly while interacting with officers, calling both white and black policemen numerous hateful racial insults, creating a hostile work environment for the officers and other employees at Village Hall which threatens their health and security and appears designed to diminish the quality of service they are permitted to provide to the public. The Mayor's privilege to drive in New York State as a result of being charged with Refusing a Chemical Test was suspended.

Classic stuff. He's refusing to resign and his lawyer says he wasn't drunk, which is a pretty bad move if you ask me. Saying he wasn't drunk is basically saying he's a racist when he's not intoxicated. Imagine if it was a white mayor spouting this racial crap?

MONTICELLO — The former head of the Sullivan County NAACP and two of Monticello's leading businessmen are calling for Mayor Gordon Jenkins to resign in the wake of his weekend arrest on drunken driving, resisting arrest and other charges.

They join Village Board member Carmen Rue, Jenkins' frequent critic, who has called for Jenkins "to be fired immediately."

The arrest is Jenkins' third during his five years as a mayor. He pleaded not guilty to the charges — all misdemeanors — before being released on $2,500 bail.

"I think he should have resigned a long time ago," said Elaine Williams of Monticello, former president and current secretary of the Sullivan County chapter of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People.

"It's one thing after another," she said. "He's not the first to be arrested for DWI, and he won't be last. But he's the mayor, and you have people looking up to you. It's time for him to step down."

Jeff Siegel, president of the Monticello Business Association, who staged this summer's successful Bagel Festival agrees. "He should absolutely resign in a heartbeat," said Siegel, owner of the Spencer Daniels Agency, who noted that Monticello is more than just the county seat.

"When people think of Monticello, they think of the main place of Sullivan, of the Catskills," he said. "How are you going to have a man leading it who is morally way out of control?"

In a statement released Monday by his lawyer, Michael Sussman, Jenkins said he would not resign.

"Mayor Jenkins rejects calls for his resignation," it said. "He believes he is fully capable of fulfilling the duties of Mayor and Village Manager "» ."

Jenkins did not deny that he was driving while intoxicated when he drove from a "social event" to see if he could assist anyone at nearby auto accident.

He also tried to explain his actions after he was arrested and brought to the police station, where Monticello police Chief Robert Mir says Jenkins punched a wall clock, acted "belligerently" and used "foul language."

According to the statement, "The Mayor was frustrated at what he saw as continued efforts to single him out for prosecution. His frustration led to further discord with (police) and the lodging of additional charges."

Still, the arrest prompted one of Monticello's most successful businessmen — and a self-described friend of the Jenkins family — to also call for the mayor to step down.

"I do think he should resign," said Les Kristt, owner of the Kristt Office Equipment company.

Kristt cited two reasons: One, Jenkins, who is black, often blames his troubles on race, according to Kristt. "It's very discomforting to me that all this has taken such an intense racial tone," said Kristt, who has twice been honored by the NAACP.

"And second, he's ruining the reputation and fiscal underpinnings of the village," Kristt said of Monticello, which due to a recent incident linked to Jenkins, must spend at least tens of thousands of dollars cleaning debris from the demolished Village Justice Court and hiring attorneys to deal with lawsuits.

"He tries to turn all this into a racial situation when it's not," said Kristt. "It's simply an example of a man not doing the job he's elected to do."
