I am looking for a bike gadget to measure the basics like speed, distance etc but also cadence and heart rate. Fairly new to cycling so don't want to spend silly money, yet. Any suggestions?

Do you have a smart phone? If so then its much cheaper getting an app and the HR strap/Cadence sensor

Problem with this is if you want to constantly monitor HR the battery will die quickly with the display on all the time. I saw this on Wiggle and thought it was good value... Cateye V3n. If you think this is silly money that's kind of the range for these things unfortunately. Make sure to double check that HR and Cadence sensors come with the device, I think in this deal they do.

imho Cadence is useful, but not so much the heart-rate if your only starting out.

A basic cateye sensor with cadence is a handy tool. You can use common sense to know when your about to have a heart attack. Back off if you start to lose breath and try hold it there. Later If you want to follow structured training then go for the heart rate monitor.

Thanks for the suggestions. I am planning to take part in a 14 day charity cycle next April and have been advised that keeping tabs on cadence and heart rate will help in seeing how my training is going.
