So basically I'm doing a 4 year undergraduate. I'm in second year. Got my fees and grant from susi last year!! I'm doing a level 8 course now!! I previously did 2years of a level 6 with an add on year for a level 7 which I didn't pass!!
So all was grand my first year fees and grant were covered in my current level 8 course!! Second year I 're applied!! Got my grant application accepted!! Got my first maintenance grant of second year and then.... All was stopped!! Apparently they have decided to inform me at the end of November I'm ineligible for the grant with no prior notice. They paid fees etc in 1st year and then originally accepted it in 2nd year!! How can I be expected without notice To come up with 7 grand fees. This is so stressful. Everything in my original application was accurate regarding my previous college. Anyone ever hear of this happening! Have I good grounds for appeal? Any help would be great. Thanks! Plus I've been in contact with susi to no avail.. I've just been told to appeal

Why did they say you are ineligible?

It was so much easier to blame it on Them. It was bleakly depressing to think that They were Us. If it was Them, then nothing was anyone's fault. If it was us, what did that make Me? After all, I'm one of Us. I must be. I've certainly never thought of myself as one of Them. No one ever thinks of themselves as one of Them. We're always one of Us. It's Them that do the bad things.

Hi.. They said I'm Not eligible due to doing a level 6 with an add on level 7 previously. All this was said in my original application but they still awarded me the grant and fees in 1st year and now they've changed their minds seemingly!!

It does look like somebody over-looked something previously.

The completed level six should not be an issue as you finished it, and have progressed up the levels.

It does appear however it was the in-completed level 7 where the issue arises. How long was between not completing the level 7 and starting the level 8?

If it was less than five years then that may be the issue, as one of their rules is that if you do not complete a course you need to wait to wait five years, and be classed as a "second-chance" student

    http://www.susi.ie/Susi/media/susi/SI-159-of-2013-Student-Grant-Scheme-2013_Final.pdf?ext=.pdf
    (6) A mature student pursuing an approved course following a break in stud-ies of at least five years, in circumstances where the mature student previously attended, but did not successfully complete, a course and is returning in order to pursue an approved course in the relevant academic year, shall be known as a "second chance student"

    - or complete an equivalent number of years study to the course they did not complete to be eligible

    (7)....

    (a) Having previously attended, but not completed, andy post leaving cer-tificate course or equivalent, an applicant shall -
    (1) be required ti complete an equivalent period of study on an approved post leaving certificate course before being eligible to be considered for a grant; or....

I would appeal it - at this stage you have nothing to lose really. Perhaps ring them first and talk to somebody you get a better feel for the situation as the letters they send out can be a bit cold and to the point.

Hi Thanks 4 your reply. It's been 4 years between courses!! So a year out on the 5 year rule.. If I had thought I wouldn't of got the grant I would have waited the extra year. But I got awarded the grant so everything was grand or so I was led to believe.I'm a year and half in to my course now nearly. As for the level seven aspect of my college. I was in the course for the full year. I just didn't pass an exam. All my previous education details were filled in correctly on my original application also.

Sorry to hear that - sounds like a proper mess up. Like I said throw in an appeal - it appears at this stage you have nothing to loose.

As for the level 7 - to clarify completes means received an award -cert, diploma etc.
