    Hi folks,

We're getting married in Killarney next April and I've been given the job of finding a DJ. It's a small crowd, about 50/55 and the reception is in a drawing room type venue so it's old style - high ceiling, fireplace, large bay window, etc.

The crowd are good craic and would appreciate a good DJ, while the floor may not be full all night. So a DJ who can read the crowd is a must. We won't have a band so it'll be a long night for him.

    Any suggestions greatly appreciated.

All night Djing and floor reading is not a problem for a professional. Look for guys who can provide request submissions prior to the night and will meet and discuss music. A good guy will ask you for this meeting whether you do or not. Its in both your interests it goes well.

As such, if you dont get someone on here, Id suggest asking the hotel for a list, you may get a local guy at a better price (less travel) than getting someone to travel and also easier to meet and discuss if that's needed.

Check out Darragh O'Dea on FB. We've booked him for our wedding next NYE and he is always interacting on FB about the weddings he does and they look fab. Can't wait to have him at ours.

Thanks for the quick replies. Was talking to the hotel earlier and they suggested a local guy, Kevin O Sullivan, who has done weddings there before.

    Anyone know of him?

The hotel lists are usually ok, ring him and get a quote. All night DJ for a professional is usually anything from 400e up to 600e depending on experience and demand but no harm is asking for a bit off. Youll get a confidence factor after speaking to him, then go and view for 20-30 minutes where he's playing.
Watch floor and mic control, his lighting, sound, even if you dont know whats a good system or not, your ears will guide you.
Dont worry about song selection at the early part night, he may be playing songs the couple asked him to that he knows aren't floor fillers.

I know Kevin, top DJ and only usually does weddings now. He has stepped away from the pub/club scene. The only thing that lets him down is is lack of crowd interaction. He will play all requests but won't go down to the floor and interact with guests.

If you are looking for someone to get your guests out of their seats (whether they want to or not) you can't go wrong with Botty (Niall O' Callaghan). I work in a hotel in town and every wedding he does there is nobody sitting down all night. He has a wireless microphone too and he just walks round the room all night chatting to people and cracking jokes. He sounds perfect for your venue tbh. I will PM you his number.

Another popular local man is Gavin Kelly from Kilcummin, but again he isn't fantastic for crowd interaction unless he knows the guests.

Botty definitely seems like the best choice for what you want. Hope this helps.

To be honest, this guy sounds like a nightmare! This isnt a rave!!! Its a wedding, and whether you like it or not, some people will not dance. A good, professional, experienced DJ will not hide behind party games, cracking jokes, and walk around a room with a radio mic looking like a tosser! A professional will have the ability to read the room, and play the right music!

Im all for crowd interaction, just not looking like the cringe tastic krusty the clown!
