Im so confused about this whole license thing for bikes.

Ok.. so originally this is how i thought it went

get learner permit and you can drive a 125cc
after 1 year on the learner permit you can drive a 250cc

you can then sit a test within your second year… if you sit it on a 125cc you can only ever drive bikes up to 250cc… if you sit it on a 250cc you can drive up to what ever the highest cc bike exists (within reason lol) on your new shiny license

im getting confused with these new license categories so advise me which one to go for.

im 25, i want to drive bikes, i don't want to be restricted to a low powered bike after i pass my test. i currently have a learner B license for a car. i want to be able to drive a large bike not for its power but because its big and tall. im 6 foot 4 in height and im a big chap so a little dinky is no good for me.

    can i drive a 250cc on a learner permit? do i have to drive a 125cc first?

Over 24 you can go straight to Cat A no restrictions except the IBT of course

So I can buy a example 400cc on my learner permit and drive it without having to restrict it? All I have to do is my basic training?

Please let this be right because the 125's are so small and I'm a 6 foot 3 chap and with a big build so I want something that's not going to make me look like a clown on a mini bike

Ok its down to the Kilowatt output of the bike and kerb weight

    a full A is 50kw+

so if you do your training on a Cat A bike and then test you're free to ride whatever you like.
if you are planning just to buy 400cc then you could do training and test on a driving schools bike and practice on LP on your own bike. I hope this is clear, if not pm me a mobile no and I'll get the Instructor to talk you through it

OK so to pass a cat A I would need to ride and test on a high powered bike. Something higher then a 400cc. Something that kicks over 50kw of power which a 400cc doesnt.say a ducati 996.. Correct? But I can still drive my little 400cc to practice myself because as a learner on a ducati I'll murder myself at the first corner lol

That's why you have to do IBT on type of bike you want Licence for even if you never intend maxing it out. BTW our Cat A is a 650 Suzuki.:)
