i've got a peugeot 407 1.6 diesel with 100000 miles on the clock, how long will this last as i take care of my cars, it's my fifth one. i've always got my cars serviced when needed but the past 4 cars were petrol, this one is diesel, i was told it would last till 300000 if i take care of a diesel. but what if they brought the milage back by 40 50 thousand before i got it how would you know if they touched it or not, i mean i got it at 100000 but what if it was 150000 in first place, any answers people

Moved out from an old old thread :)

To be honest, no-one can tell you "how long a car will last".
Keep up the servicing, fix what you can afford and pray nothing major breaks.

This is just a guess but another 100k is possible should nothing major happen.
Are you clued in with timing belt changes etc for your car?
Or is it a chain in these?

timing belt just done, it's nct till july 2015. the fact that it passed nct is a good sign, but what about this thing of dealers bringing back the mileage before you buy? how can you know the story there

My c5 has 241k, its doing 500 miles a week not a bother. Not even burning a drop of oil.

it's just i've never had a diesel, i always taught they last longer than petrol, i used to do 70 miles a day with a petrol to get to work and back, now i live beside the job which means a tenner would do me 3 days, still just concerned of how far a diesel would go since im willing to look after it

Cars do not have set expiration dates or mileage, how long or short one lasts depends on lots of factors.

if you live beside the job and are doing low milage then you are worrying about nothing,

Theoretically it could last another ten years and do 500k miles or it could fall apart tomorrow. If it's well looked after and serviced regularly then it should do you a considerable length of time. No one can answer your question as it's impossible to say. As for the cars mileage, if it's been clocked then there's no point worrying about it as there is absolutely nothing you can do about it is there some reason why your now worrying that the mileage may not be correct that you didn't question when you were initially looking at the car before buying? Why did you buy a diesel when you are only doing small mileage???

It really all depends on the type of mileage. If it's N roads or M'ways, well then it's grand. Town work and the 1.6hdi isn't going to end well, the DPF will just get clogged quickly without sustained high engine temperature and a mid-high RPM.

Well my 2005 407 1.6HDi has 167,700 miles on it and still going strong.

Keep it serviced and change the oil regularly for the correct type (5W 30) and it should be fine. Regular runs down the motorway will help.

Have a 407 1.6hdi and never any trouble with it 120k miles on it. People laugh at fiats and I know a guy has a fiat Ducati with 300k miles and its still going strong

Car can last indefinitely except in case you crash it.
All what you have to do is service it regularly and fix problems as they appear.

Question is - when it will become not financially viable to keep fixing it.

i got a diesel just for a change, i don't regret it i get much longer out of the diesel

the dpf has bin removed, so no need to worry about doing small milage
