Loft space in bedrooms

We need some extra space in the upstairs of our house. Regular 3 bed semi D, we initially thought of an attic conversion. The problem with that was the attic room would be so small and low I wouldn't be able to stand up straight in it and we'd loose space in one bedroom due to the stairs. I imagine we'd end up with less useable space with the conversion.

What I thought we could do, and this is what I'd really like feedback on, is create loft space in the two kids bedrooms. It's space would hold the beds and some storage space, accessed from within each bedroom by a ladder. Basically an elaborate loft bed. It would free up a lot of space in the small rooms they have.

I see this as a partial attic conversion, no plumbing needed, possible an electric socket and a velux for some light.

Has anyone done something similar, is it bonkers to consider.

    Any thoughts appreciated.

you need a structural eng to determine what effect removing the ceiling joists to create this space will have.

Why not put the beds up and fix them to the wall if you can fix to 2 walls only 1 post will be needed that way you have a hell of a lot of floor space try imagine a bunk bed without the bottom bunk and also any space over 2m is wasted in any room

    Thanks for the replies.
I'll take the advise and get someone in to determine the feasability of extending the bedroom into the attic space.
I have worked out plans to install an ikea loft bed and although it would free up some floor space I dont think it would be useful in the long term.
If the attic extension worked it would provide a new level to the bedroom with a bed, storage and a chill out area.

Any recommendations on who could quote for this? I'm in the north Dublin area.

    Thanks
