I am returning to College next year and at present a 4 year Maths/Science Degree is my number one choice.
I've read all the threads about Secondary teaching on here, and job situation sure sounds bleak!
However you also hear about the lack of people choosing maths in University and general scarcity of Maths skills out there.

Just wondering if Maths teaching posts are as scarce as others, given it's a core subject.

    Thanks :)

Still scarce. I graduated 5 years ago and even then there was very few jobs for maths. The reality is that the dept aren't going to hire qualified teachers of the subject if there is a permanent teacher in place (unqualified). They would have to be redeployed. The situation will be very slow to change. It is difficult to get positions in any subject.

If you're willing to move to England though, it's a lot easier!

I am a maths teacher - fully qualified, 12 years experience. I also have applied maths, accounting, IT and business studies. I've given up trying to find a proper job - i.e. more than a few hours a week. I'm back in college now upskilling for the IT industry. I know of 1 other teacher doing the same - also a maths teacher with many years experience.
