Bought a cheap enough petrol generator a few years ago to hook up to house as a back up electric supply. Had one electrician in a few years ago and he left me hanging and the machine never got integrated into the house.
3 or so years on and the ESB is talking strike so I'm planning to get a sparks to integrate it now just in case there are power cuts.
My question is simple - the generator has never been used and the fact it's been idle for a few years, could I f*ck the engine up by trying it now?

Wouldn't think so. Maybe change the spark plug, fresh oil and fresh petrol and off you go.

    Agree +1

Then attach high load like hair dryer to check output.

talk to your electrician before you connect to the house im pretty sure you need a change over switch or something it would have 2 supplies if the esb came back on

Thanks. Had this chat with the last lad who let me down. It'll be a manual switchover so when the esb supply comes back on I won't actually know unless I notice neighbours lights!

If the Jenny has never been used ie. No oil no petrol it will be 100%

If it was filled with petrol and oil you may likely have to clean out the carburetor. The petrol evapourates and leaves a jelly residue in the carb.

All petrol engines if not in use should on their last run have the petrol switched off at the tank and let it run out..then empty the two bowls on the carb before storing it up
