Has anybody owned one. Is so , what are they like? What's better, manual or DSG?

The diesel engine isn't a patch on the petrol, otherwise they're pretty nice cars. Look carefully though as too many are missing desirable spec items such as climate/xenons/wheel upgrade.

No, it was a costly optional extra on Irish cars. Standard on UK cars. If you see one with climate, chances are it's an import. Xenons are rare too (not standard on UK cars either) but are very desirable and come with LED DRL's on later models.

I had one for 2.5 years and I was very happy with it. I went from a MKV GTI to the GTD and now I'm back in a GTI again. I went back to petrol mainly because I'm not doing the mileage for diesel and the MK7 GTD is significantly more expensive than the GTI. It was my first diesel and going from he MKV, I didn't feel it wanting for power at all. It was very petrol-like in power delivery and smoothness and very rev-happy. It was a very comfortable motorway cruiser with bags and bags of torque. I actually think it was better than my new GTI on the motorway - less boomy and more comfortable to drive at prolonged high speeds. From a standing start of course, the GTI would beat it hands down, but in real world every day commuting, the GTD is a nice place to be.

Only on very cold starts would you notice the typical noisy diesel tickover. MPG was pretty good if not spectacular. 35-40 mpg in city driving but you'd easily do 50+ MPG on long runs.

It's a Golf with a modestly powered diesel engine.

dsg gear boxes have to be serviced reguarly so make sure to look out for that if your going for a dsg gearbox

I suspect this post is in jest, but I'll bite anyway. It's all relative, but I wouldn't consider 170bhp and 260lb's torque in a small hatchback "modest".

It will also respond very favourably to remapping, although I had a lot of difficulties with my own attempts at getting this done - long long story for another thread!

But the petrols will respond favourably to remapping also?
Anyway, isn't the Mk 6 GTD actually just a Golf with the 170bhp diesel and the GTI body panels where as the Mk7 GTD is actually a GTI with the diesel engine? (i.e. suspension and all the same as the GTI)

Yes the petrols remap well too... And your point is?

The MK6 GTD has all the same styling details as the GTI barring different wheels, rear exhaust layout and grey/silver in place of red detailing.
Yes the suspension is not that of the GTI but it's lower than a regular Golf. I recall the weight of the Diesel engine has something to do with this. I think the same applies with the MK7.

Just wondering what would you consider it?

Of course it is all relative but compared to the majority of low emissions, low tax ****e boxes bought since 2008 it is a performance car.

Not in jest, I've owned a 170bhp diesel car, it had decent poke for a diesel which I consider modest these days. Now for me the GTD, vRS diesels and the likes are pokey diesels in hot hatch clothing that appeal to those who normally would not consider buying a traditional hot hatch for various reasons.

I'm not knocking the car but for me it is what it is, a pokey diesel hatchback.

My point is that it seemed to be offered as a potential plus point for the diesel, where as it's a moot point if both can be remapped.
