    Hey,

I got hit by a driver who was reversing while I was stationary in a car park.

No real damage so I won't be claiming, just a scratch on both cars.

Should I report this to the insurance or Gardai just incase he decides to report a hit and run?

Do you have any reason to think he might do that?

Why wont you be claiming to get the damage repaired? Or have they agreed to cover it themselves?

If you feel that there is any reason to notify then insurer then do; its no harm to have a note of it on file in case you need to use them at a later date.

It's only a scratch on a 1999 Yaris which already had scratches.

The other driver was also a young lad with an L plate so I feel bad for him.

I'll just tell the insurance company.

Pretty decent of you .. A lot of people would have used it as an excuse to get a full respray

I watched something like this happen about 1 month ago in Castlebar. A young lad clipped a mirror on a car, she was in the car and he was driving into a spot.
He reversed out and parked in another spot.
The mirror was pushed backwards, wasn't hanging off.

I rolled down the window and listened to the woman, who was incredibly loud and wouldn't let the young lad get a word in, she demanded 250 euro to get a new mirror.... he told her no way, it wasn't broken, she wouldn't let him near the mirror.
Anyway for 5 mins she roared her head, he was bound to be embarrassed, so in the end he gave her 100 euro cash, no receipt. He walked away.
She proceeded to pocket the cash and waited in her car for about 5 mins.
She hopped out pushed the mirror back into place and then walked over to the young lads car and took his insurance details and car details.

I had a situation like this in Tesco Ardkeen in Waterford around Christmas last year, I got out of my car when an older man in the car beside me accused me of hitting his car with my door. I'm always careful of this when getting out as I wouldn't like someone doing that to my car. He started demanding money to fix his car and making a scene, accusing me of having no respect for others property. I lost my temper a bit and he then accused me of bullying him. I saw a Garda car in the filling station so pointed it out and said I would go and call them and they could sort it because I did nothing wrong, at which point he went quiet, got in his car and drove off. There are people like this everywhere just looking to make a quick few euros, stand up to them and say you will wait for the Gardai and 9/10 times they will back down as they know they are in the wrong.

I hope you did the same and then got in touch with the insurer to say that you would act as a witness should a claim go in?

Or can you even do such a thing?

Had an accident like that a few years ago. There was about IR £1000 worth of damage done. Gardas were called as she was saying I hit her from behind. She breathalised failed the test & on top of that she was driving her husbands company car which she wasnt insured to drive in the first place. Also cctv showed her reversing into me. I learnt my lesson there, I always call the garda's & inform my insurance company.

Well we didn't even exchange info. The lad was so scared he left without even writing down the reg, nevermind looking at the insurance details.

Personally I wouldn't worry about it. The max I would do is let my insurance know just to be 100% safe and covered. I cant really see anything coming of it but I would inform your company and leave it at that.

a friend used to drive for a big courier outfit and clipped a car in a retail park at like 5-10 mph. a bit of plastic on yer ones cars bumper was damaged.

she started roaring and shouting, n got the cops up - who rightly told her not to waste there time again. hubby up then n a major scene also. not skangers the two of them, middle-class respectible looking etc

a claim went in for 35k, whiplash etc when 100 quid would have been loads. anyway the boss of the company told my mate that the claim was sorted, their private investigator got a few snaps of her at her salsa class! he said if they didnt investigate most claims they would'a went wallop years ago
