Just looking for some info as to what these cars are like, im looking at a 98 2.0 model, my question is what are they like to live with, im coming out of a Subaru impreza so MPG will be better (i hope)

is there any common faults on these?
what are they like to run?

im mainly looking for a nice family daily driver with good boot space and room for the 2 kids

They're a grand car and will go forever, good honda engine. We got a 2000 with 132K miles. Running brilliantly.

We had to replace suspension bushes, so if you take one for a spin make sure you take it (slowly) over rough road. Preferably rough town roads as the knocking can be loud at slower speeds.

The window regulators can be dodgy, check for very slow to open and close windows, if they sound like they're struggling a lot they need to be replaced, I had to replace the drivers side and the others are a bit slow but I don't use them much so it's not an issue.

Make sure you let the drivers side window up and down the whole way, sometimes they get stuck.

Honda parts are ridiculously expensive, I got a radiator off Ebay for 80 euro's shipped, honda wanted 450 Euro's.

Honda wanted over 400 Euro's for the window regulator and I got one shipped on Ebay for 80 Euro's brand new Honda part.

Go for the 2000 at least, it's got a bit more power and torque, even better if you can find a Vtec engine, they're great.

Just make sure the timing belt and water pump have been replaced around 90K miles or 7 years. Not 100% sure. If there's no record of it then get it done. Don't take someone's word. Should be worth a few bob off the price if it hasn't been done.

Overall good car, good size and great over Irish back roads. 30 odd mpg driven easy, 25 ish with a good few motorway stints. Above 60 mph it starts to drink petrol. Lack of 6th gear is a shame.

If you're racking up a few miles then you can convert it to LPG would save a lot, conversion is 1000 Euro's ish, so do your sums.

No vtec in that model. Good pull all the same, from 00 onwards 150 versus 120?ish hp.
Bushings definitely a likely issue at that age. Balljoints too maybe? Also windows as mentioned. Rear diff can give issues, a bit of "dragging" during very tight low speed parking manoeuvres may be fixable with new diff fluid. A whine or grating is bad news. NCT testers testing 4wd on 2wd rollers won't have helped.

Rads split at the point where hose meets plastic top of rad.

Ah so the rad splitting is common then ?

Still it's a cheap easy to fix problem, eBay is your man, :D

Yeah I'd definitely go with the 00+ more power! be very useful in a big tank like the crv.

Vtec will be more expensive if you can or are willing to spend more ?

    Saw this on donedeal.

    http://http://cars.donedeal.ie/cars-for-sale/honda-cr-v-2003/5799991

    Vtec, not bad price.

The seller has the tax down as 1,000 euros, it's a 2.0 so it's 710 euros.

Great car, and no depreciation and it sounds great above 5 k revs !

No tax though and I wouldn't pay the asking price if it needs much work. Timing belt etc.
