Upgrading to a second-hand Sky box?

    Hey guys,

I am getting the folks a new 28" HD TV for the Christmas. They are still using a 2006 era SD white Sky+ box with their current CRT TV set. They are probably using the most basic subscription package with Sky.

I think I should get a more up-to-date Sky box to help them get the most out of the new TV

Is it possible to buy a used Skybox from Donedeal or from one of the 2nd hand shops in town for example and start using that instead to receive Sky?

Or would it better to upgrade to a HD pack and get the new box that way?

If you were to ring up having bought a second hand box you need to get it activated with the card, so just say you bought one in a Sky Store as I wouldn't recommend saying you bought it second hand and they'll connect it and you'll be good to go.
However, if your parents dont mind being in a new 12 month contract which a free box would entail then go right ahead.
    Hope this helps somehow.
    Good luck

I reckoned it may have been easy as that. Shan't say I got the box 2nd hand then!

Thanks for the quick reply. Much obliged.

    No problem!
Just ring up say you bought a new box and want it linked with the card and they'll do it for you.

A word of warning from other posters here - be careful where you buy a second hand box, it has recently come to light sky are now blocking any second hand boxes sold before their 12 month contract has expired or where money is owed on the sky account linked to that box and will not pair your existing Sky card to it. (http://www.boards.ie/vbulletin/showthread.php?p=86523626#post86523626)

If buying a secondhand box go to a reputable local or online shop who will give you a warranty and if you have any problems they can be easily sorted e.g. http://www.tvtrade.ie/satellite-receivers/sky-boxes.html

Why not? They'll know it's a secondhand box, owned by someone else previously when you give them the box serial no. to pair the card. They'll have no problem with it provided it's out of contract with no money owing.

I would seriously considering cancelling your parents sky for a few days and use which one of their names wasn't on the bill . You will more then likely get free installation and a cheaper package for a few months
