Scammed Online

    Hi there.

Unfortunately I have been scammed online by a twitter user. Now, before I go any further I would like to point out that I was incredibly naive in the whole process so I don't need reminding of that. I walked into it but i'm looking for advice on what I can do now (if anything).

I was seeking two tickets for Arsenal/Southampton at the weekend as i'll be in London that day. I was referred to a guy (by a friend) who was selling three tickets for the game. I got in touch with him and he said that he respected the fact I would travel from overseas to see our beloved Arsenal. We had a genuine chat for about an hour. He seemed genuine.

Then, came to the whole payment for the tickets. He wasn't able to meet on the day or take a paypal payment and that if I sent money directly (Yes, yes, I know. Alarm bells should have been ringing) he could post the tickets straight away. Basically, I sent money (€90) to a Western Union branch in the UK where he collected it. Surprise, surprise no tickets arrived and he hasn't responded to me!

I have his twitter account which has been active since 2011 and his name. Is there anything I can or should do? What should be the appropriate action to take. I know my money is gone but i there anyway I can make this person feel some implications.

I know I have been so incredibly stupid and my desire for the tickets got the better of me. I'm largely at fault but I did come across an awful scumbag too. Naivity + Scumbag = Trouble.

    Any advice/suggestions?

Probably not a whole lot you can do. I doubt he is traceable by his twitter account and I'm sure it's not the first time he has done it! It take it as a lesson and move on!

First, I think that you should have a chat with your friend who referred you to this guy. If he has any further details that he can give, make a note of them. How does he know the scammer? Has he dealt with him previously?

Secondly, try to put together your paperwork and scan all of it, to include screenshots of whatever you can get online. This firefox addon is quite good for screenshots.

Then put the entire story together, including everything that police may need, to include all twitter account details. Then make your complaint. I'm not sure if you can email it, but you will find out.

https://online.met.police.uk/ (assuming that the Western Union office is in London?)

There may be CCTV footage of the scammer collecting your money from the Western Union office. You could mention this to police. However, that footage is not likely to be kept for very long. You need to make your complaint straight away.

Make sure to follow up on this nice and politely, and see if you can nail the bastard. I'm not sure that I fancy your chances, but give it a shot anyway.
