Winter Golf or Break?

Is it just me or is anyone else looking forward to a bit of a winter break from the course?

Maybe with the very cold weather on the way the thought of freezing my hands in adverse weather conditions doesn't sound too appealing or maybe as the pro calendar is more or less at a close after the world cup theres a natural off season feel about this time of year.

I generally play year round with a few weeks off in January when it gets really bad, when the course is closed, but reckon I might take an earlier then expected hiatus this year. Unusually the enthusiasm for the game isn't there at the moment, anyone else the same?

    I don't doubt that!

I find it hard to get myself motivated for non qualifying rounds in the winter. Placing all over the shop and forward tees. I know not all these things are bad given the time of year but it ain't summer golf if you get me!

12 holes, 2 hours, short course, no handicap to worry about.
most enjoyable golf of the year imo!

I love it, but going to force myself to have a break for 3 to 4 weeks in winter.

There was one day this week it was 50 k/hr. About 5 deg/c. Got on first hit a ball and to my shame , walked in. It was just too hardcore.

Very high wind in cold is a bit much, give me very cold any day.

Im lucky I play links, I wouldn't get out of bed if real greens not in play.

There are some days you get a great one, this year so far has been great. On a good one, the air is so fresh, the sky is clear, just before 11 you get a bit of heat. Nobody around, not a sound in the place. Can be bliss.

I love judging the extra club too, a p/w from where you hit your 56, trying a punch or a few different clubs off tees.

I think we don't know how lucky we are, a friend of mine is in US, his course is closing now for about 4 to 5 months due to snow.

I certainly do not disagree with you there. 12 holes is the perfect winter course length.

I only take the 'enforced' break where the course is closed early mornings due to frost.
Great time of year for good on-course practice - shot making, taking different clubs, taking shots on where you might usually play conservatively, etc.

Most important for me though is that I feel that I have to keep my swing going all through the year

I normally play all year round. but taking a few weeks break this year as have been playing really badly, so just getting a few lessons and working on the range..

I'll go back playing when the autum leaves have cleared, nothing worse than bombing a drive down the fairway and can't find it with all the leaf's!

We play full course all year round so don't take a break unless the weather makes me. I would never join a course that had temp greens for the winter.
We are currently still playing counting comps.

    What course is that Mike?

For me I have had sort of an enforced break since the Ryder Jug, hoping to get out early Sunday morning before the All-Blacks game but witht the early morning frost it is looking less likely to be an 18-hole round. After that I don't think I can play again until December 21/22.

Must say I needed the break, back and neck feeling great!

Only problem I have is that I live an hour from my club and get hacked off driving that distance to play 14, usually wet, cold holes and the threat of temporary greens. Not worth my time, so yes, I often take a break during the winter, playing only when something tempting crops up.

We have a few hardy souls who play both 12 hole comps every Sat...more than enough golf!

    Out today - played 9.

What a day for golf. Full course still in service - forward tees.

I try to go out and play as often as i can and im using winter for practice in order to go out in summer and go from 22.8 to 18

In my opinion i think the best thing for high handicappers is too go out and play whenever they can

    My 2 cents

I'll try to play though the winter but I'm coming back from a 3 year break so I'm keen as mustard.

I'm in the same boat. I've been away from the game for 3 years and just coming back now. I'm kind of looking forward to the winter golf as I won't be putting as much pressure on myself.

    Look out next March!

I'm finishing up on the 13th December and plan on being sick of playing golf in a few weeks if the weather is kind to me!!!

As long as I can find an open course I'll keep playing.

I couldn't get out for a little over two weeks a short time ago and it had a big impact on my game, although I'm sure it was more severe as I only started playing compared to longer playing golfers.

this was my first year back and I was sure I would play all year long but haven't hit a ball since September :(
I cant seem to get the interest up to go out and play . if you take a 6 month break I wonder how long it takes
to get back in the groove .

I enjoy winter.. play twice a week once course is open.... play along by the sea, so usually cold, windy etc... feck it..just get out an play

really enjoy March into April with clocks changing and longer evenings, however, the practice and play through winter period is a critical building block....

Love winter golf too, anyone who takes a break does not really love the game :-)

Frost has gotten in the way two mornings this week, and the course has taken some amount of rain, it was bone dry up to a week ago.

I'd say that weather will have an impact on the courses for weeks - it was the fact they were soft to start with. Back to a links for me.
