iTunes & External Drive issue

Argh! My Mac is giving me grief and I may at this stage have made the problem worse! I'm running Mavericks with latest iTunes.

I wanted to move my music to an external drive as my HDD is getting to max. I followed steps online to move the music but iTunes doesn't want to play ball.

So I've tried so many things now i may need to start from scratch. I have all my music now on an external drive and despite mapping the drive and consolidating library, iTunes has the exclamation mark beside each song saying it can't locate it.

Am I better off erasing everything in iTunes and importing all the music from fresh? Really don't want to lose my playlists though.

If you move the whole iTunes folder from your music directory to an external drive, then launch iTunes holding Option, it'll ask you to select a library.

There's plenty of ways to skin this particular cat, but the above is the most straight forward.

Unfortunately this didn't work. I select the library but then when I click on a song in iTunes it asks me to locate the song. :(
