    Hi Johnmck,

It all really depends on what period in history she has a particular interest in ie. Prehistory,Early Christian,Early Medieval, etc.,

A more recent publication is 'The Origins of the Irish' by J.P. Mallory(published by Thames & Hudson).I'd highly recommend this one!

'Treasures of the National Museum',edited by the present and former Directors of the National Museum,Pat Wallace and Raghnall Ó Floinn(published by Gill & Macmillan,2002).This can be picked up in any of the National Museum shops. You can also go online to the National Museum website: http://www.museum.ie/. and have it delivered. It's a wonderfully illustrated book with over 250 full colour photographs and is a comprehensive introduction to the Irish Antiquities collections of the NMI.There are obviously other books available from the National Museum online shop too.

'Newgrange and the Bend of the Boyne',by Geraldine Stout,is a must have for those interested in prehistory.

I'd highly recommend visiting the website of publishers 'Wordwell': http://www.wordwellbooks.com/.

Wordwell specialise in books of Irish Archaeological and Historic interest and their books are reasonably priced.

There's always the danger that your friend may already have some of the books I've outlined above!

    I hope this helps.

Just a few more with a Neolithic bent:

    'Landscapes of Neolithic Ireland',by Prof.Gabriel Cooney(published by Routledge,2000).
    'Irish Prehistory - A Social Perspective' - Gabriel Cooney & Eoin Grogan(Wordwell,1994).
    'Newgrange - Archaeology,Art and Legend', by Michael J. O'Kelly(Thames & Hudson,1982).

The above are publications of a more scholarly nature and your friend may already have come across these in her studies at Uni.

I'd highly recommend calling in to HodgesFiggis bookshop on Dawson St.,Dublin(if you're in that area). They have a great selection of books relating to Archaeology and the staff are very helpful.

    Good Luck!
