    hi lads,
i have a stihl ms170 which is roughly 5 years old and has done a savage amount of work and paid for its self ten fold never giving and trouble but lately shes a bit smokey and is putting fuel out the exhaust not a huge amount just enough to wet it that the eye can be seen

im thinking along the lines the rings are worn??
i have seen bits on ebay cylinder and piston rings etc genuine parts for about 60e so id gladly put her right if this seems the problem rather than 260 for a new one ..

    all help welcome

Well its hard to know with 2 strokes, because they are smokey at the best of times because of the oil mixed with the fuel.Maybe the mix was made too strong?

its just theres more smoke than usual, dont think its the mix i use the 500ml bottle with the ratio markings that came with the saw and always 50:1
it would have 3 fesh mixes a week.

    thanks for the comment ;)

Did you check the condition of the plug? You could check to see if there is much compression, although not accurate at all without a test gauge but as a general check you could put your finger over the spark plug hole and pull the chord to check for pressure. If she is running, I'd say compression is ok though.Carb might need adjusting possibly.

Also take the exhaust off and clean it. Not sure about all the Sthil's but the ones I have had have always had exhausts that split in two so you can get to the inside. Sometimes it will be a right mess with built up half burnt oil which just blocks the exhaust up.
