you should not pay until you reach the destination. Irish rail are unable to sell a child ticket from many of their suburban station vending machines so the child is allowed pay at their destination.

There can be no penalty because there is no way to buy a ticket at the stations when the booking office is closed.

I thought the child option came up after you had booked an adult ticket.

Have a look at www.irishrail.ie for train fares.

    Also, www.leapcard.ie for Leap details.

There are child Leap cards available if your children are using trains without an adult.

You will only be charged a child fare when a Child Leapcard is used.

Can a child ticket be bought on its own from a ticket vending machine on the Dublin dart/commuter lines?

Answer - only in a very small number of stations.

If no ticket is available to buy at the station the child may buy their ticket on the train or at their destination.

For DART / Dublin Commuter fares, go to this page and put in the relevant stations. http://www.irishrail.ie/index.jsp?p=118&n=198
how does the leap card works?
You buy a card for €5. You then add credit to the card (the credit is on the card, not an account like a mobile phone - the card is then as good as money). You tag on at the validator / ticket gate at the station you are leaving and then tag off at the station you arrive at. You do the same at Luas stops. On buses, you only tag on - if travelling less than the full fare, go to the drivers machine, otherwise, tag on at the validator on the right.
