Question about wall Insulation

    Hi,

Probably a stupid question but how do i find out if the walls of my house have been insulated.
Moved into a 7 year old 3 bed Mid terrace house at the start of the year, Now the weather is getting a bit cold i am finding it next to impossble to heat the house especially the sitting room and one of the bedrooms.

Even if the heating is on full for 2 odd hours these rooms are luke warm at best and within 30 minutes of it been turned off the rooms are stone cold
There is no noticable draughts in either room, air vent have been changed to open and shut ones.

When i changed the vents i did not notice any insulation behind the plaster board but i did noticed that there is about a 2 inch gap between the pipe and the vent cover would this be normal ?

I presume if this is not normal that it would cause the cold air that cannot get into the room as the vent is closed to just travel down the back of the plasterboard and around the room making the walls cold ?

Is there any way to tell if the walls were insulated or if the builder cut corners and didnt bother

    No stupid questions, only answers.

To answer you question, yes easily. One way is to open up sections of the wall and look. This is rather destructive and not really recommended.
Another way is to remove any socket covers and using a borescope (or small mirror & torch configuration) have a look. Yet another non-destructive way is to use a thermal imaging camera.

From what you describe and the age of the property, I think you may have an air tightness issue in addition to a possible insulation issue.

    Hi bambam
Open up your esb box outside you should be able to see if there's any insulation in wall
    NW

Hmmm, I understood from the op's post that it is the internal insulation's presence that is in question. Perhaps the op can clarify.

I'll try the socket the weekend. What other signs would help confirm if there was an air tightness issue.

It's mounted on a neighbours wall so won't tell me much about my house

Yes that's what I was initially looking at but now I am thinking if there is any form of insulation other that the attic, heating has been on 6 hours and it's not that warm at all
