123.ie renewal quote

    Hi folks,

Last year my premium with 123.ie was about €550. I got an email off them yesterday as it is up for renewal next month and the best price was over €1200! So I rang them up to ask about it and they just said that that was the best price they could give.

But then I went back to the website and got a quote as a "new" customer and the best price was €420.

Has anyone else experienced this? I haven't bought the new quote yet but I wonder will I be able to as I am an existing customer.

Never accept the first offer. Shop around and come back to them with quotes from other companies

Double-check that the online quote is for exactly the same cover, shop around all the other ins cos/brokers, and then go ahead with the best quote.

Just do the quote online, get the reference number or a screenshot of the best quote available. Ring them up and give it to them. They will accept it then. I had something similar last year and they accepted the quote I sent.

Yeah it's not uncommon OP that the renewal is through the roof with any insurance company. There's plenty of threads on this incl one from me :)

Just move to another company, it's doesn't pay to stay loyal to an insurance company.

Just call them up and tell them that you got a quote as a new customer and it was only €420 or whatever. They generally apologise and say that "the system does this" sometimes. Be prepared to pay the reneweal at the proper price there and then and you'll be sorted within 5mins.

Happened to me last year, although the difference in price wasn't the same as you got!

I've had the same thing happen with 123 a few times in the past, I always just went and bought the insurance on line at the cheaper price, never bothered ringing them about it. Then simply send them back the NCB cert when your policy and certificate arrives.

Thanks for the replies. I think I will shop around first and see how I get on.

Like CJC999 said, we did exactly the same.

Just got off the phone with 123 down by 100 from last year.
Tried Chill and they were 200 dearer.

No consistency at all with them

Most insurance companies are a bunch of lunatics, forever chancing their arm with renewal quotes like that. It's as if they have no interest in retaining customers.

I think there some mad feller sitting in the corner, drooling and they're asking him "Hey Seamus, how much should we charge this guy?" and he goes "Ah Jaysus, begorrah, I'll be chgarrgin' him twixt bedivveled umpten cockroach bedspring!"
Which would certainly tie in with best Irish practice of paying international experts millions to advise on what best international practice is and what the best setup in a particular case should be, which then gets completely ignored and they ask Mad Seamus what should be done.
If you look at the way decisions are being made in Ireland in just about any organisation (especially state or semi state), it actually perfectly explains just about every decision ever made.

RSA and Zurich are as bad as any of our "native" breeds, so obviously they all have a Mad Sidney in the corner in his Morris-dancing outfit, or a Mad Horst in his lederhosen, as appropriate! :D

Same happened with me and 123.ie. Policy went up by 85%. I have shopped around and got one cheaper than last year from someone else. Same deal looking at 123.ie, public site was 80% cheaper than my renewal quote.

They rang yesterday wondering was I renewing, I was looking forward to the argument, there was none. Chap just said “cheaper quote off someone else, fair enough” . That call usually goes, “what did you get, we will match it, do better etc”…. Nothing just” fair enough, bye

Nothing has changed with my risk profile, same cover, same car, same everything proven by the fact that all other companies want my business at the vastly lower price.

Not sure RSA are actively looking for or wanting to keep business. Very strange.

I checked out a few places this time but 123.ie still came out the cheapest.

Some of them asked questions like "is the vehicle used for commuting to work?" & "what area is it primarily driven around?". It seemed the more questions they seem to ask the dearer it was.

With 123.ie my premium went down if I added my mother as a named driver (which the rep suggested when I went to them years ago), with axa it went up????

Went monthly this time and only cost me an extra €20 in total.
Ah well, 12 months til I have to do it all again :)

a big hike is a bit nuts, but many people will just renew o avoid hassle . The renewal letter always makes it sound like they are competitive, just that an increase in claims and international market conditions have caused premiums to increase generally, but they are pleased :D to offer this competitive rate...

Hate to say it, but ruthless shopping around and playing them off one another is the only way to go.

Schmucks who pay on renewal are the ones who "help" us all.

You could just use a broker to find you the best price - always works for me

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 225 ✭✭Patrickheg

    Opposite happened me.

Shopped around prior to renewal and the best rate as a new customer was about 750(09 330d, 5 yrs ncb, d9) from 123 and aviva which was in line with what I paid last year. Then I got my renewal via email from 123 for 510 so jumped on it before they changed their mind(all the details were correct.

    Strange industry

I'd call it a complicated industry. You really need to know what you are looking at. My opinion is that the online providers highlight the bottom line premium in the expectation that the customer might not see where they have trimmed the cover (NCB protection, excess, windscreen, driving of other cars etc).

A good broker will see through all of that on your behalf and get you the best balance for your money. A bad broker will know the hidden pitfalls of a policy but let you take it to keep you as a customer with a low premium. It is my experience that there are far more good brokers out there than bad ones
