I don't have a p45, and am being emergency taxed. If I ring the revenue can I just give them the business number and will this stop emergency tax?

Ring the PAYE section of revenue. You will have to register the employment. You will be asked for your PPS number and the employers registered number(employers tax number) and the date of commencement.
The employer may have sent the pay and tax details to revenue. Revenue will send out a tax credit certificate to the employer who inputs it onto their payroll system and take you off emergency tax. You will not receive any refund of overpaid tax untill revenue receive the p45.

I don't have a p45 from my previous employer. They absolutely need this do they? I assumed registering myself would have been enough.

Not necessarily. Call Revenue, give them your PPS and your employer's ref no. They will then send you both a Form 12A which is a certificate of your tax credits. Takes about a week to issue.

Not sure how quickly they'll issue the refund though. It's close to the end of the financial year, so I assume they'll wait until the NY to issue a refund.

The p45 is not necessary to get your tax credits, it is necessary to get a refund of emergency tax paid. You can register the job over the phone. The form 12A is only for a first employment. As I said the employer may have already sent in p45 to revenue.

12A can be used in other circumstances too.

There's also a P46a which can be used for people who don't have a P45. Google p46a site:revenue.ie to get it.

Either way, what's important is that you tell Revenue why you don't have a P45. There are some circulstances where it's not looked for.

Your overpaid emergency tax can be paid back once the employer gets a certificate of tax credits for you. But it may not all be paid back: because it's likely that Revenue will put you on "week one" if they haven't had a P45 or P35 (I think the latter is the right number) from your old employer. And because it's so late in the year, it's possible that they will soon stop issuing tax credits.

So you may have to also contact Revenue in the new year, after your current employer has issued your P60, and ask for a balancing statement for this year.

My wife is on emergency tax as well. We registered her employment with revenue office on O'Connel street in Dublin citycenter.

Its already a week since we hand in our Form 12A but even this week she paid her emergency tax.

On the payslip, we can see PAYE, PRSI, and Universal social charge (under Deduction column). Which one of these is emergency tax amount?

Under Payment column, it says Basic Pay, is that the pay after taxes or before taxes? She is working on minimum wage.

When you hand in an item into revenue it can take up to ten working days to process as it goes into a queue. If you ring revenue on their lo-call number and tell them it is urgent they will usually pull out that item and deal with it for you. Give them a ring, nothing to lose.

The Emergency Tax is the PAYE, and part of the PRSI too I think.

It's not very high for the first few weeks, but after about 9 weeks becomes about 45% or suchlike.

    Hi all
Apologies if this was meant to be posted in a new thread.

I also was being emergency taxed for a while till today. I received my tax cert and my payslip shows that I'm now being taxed normally.
My questions are, how do I get the cash that i was emergency taxed? is there a form that I have to fill? How soon can I expect the cash ie how long does does it normally take? also will this cash be deposited into my account or will i get a cheque etc?
Thanks in advance for the help

It depends on whether your employer submitted a p45 or not. If they did and you are being taxed on a cumulative basis then you overpayment is already being taken into account when making deductions. That being said, as we are so close to year end there may still be a rebate owed to you so you should request a p21 balancing statement in the new year. Any over payment of tax will then be refunded to you. This can be done either by cheque, direct to your bank account or by adding the value of the credits to your 2014 allowances. You need to let revenue know which you would prefer.

If no p45 was submitted then you could be on a week one tax basis. In which case although you are not being emergency taxed you could possibly still be getting over taxed. If this is the case, given it is almost December the only way to resolve it is to apply for a p21 as outlined above. At this stage in the year revenue and re unlikely to re-issue credits.

You can tell how you are being taxed from your cert. Across the page, in the box it will either say week 1 or it will say from x date. If it says x date then you are getting your unused credits against your current income (i.e the extra you paid in emergency tax is being offset against your wages and you are paying less tax over all). If it says week 1 you are off emergency but not being credited for the over payment.

Either way, apply for a p21 as soon as you get your p 60 in January.
