    are tyres checked by machine at the nct or is it just a visual inspection?

    They do use a tyre depth gauge if they think they are low ,
    how else would they tell you that there's 2.1mm

    They will advise you if depth is below 3mm, below 1.6 it's a fail.
    If tyre is 6+ years old they will also only advise.
