Remember these adapters are actually limited to 100MB/s on the Ethernet side.

    ?
Can you explain in laymans terms?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 865 ✭✭✭kazzer

Some of these only have a Fast Ethernet (100Mbps) network interface adapter, and if that is the case with this model, 100Mbps will be the bottleneck, despite the 500Mbps rating.

Just to add, you will find more expensive models with Gigabit Ethernet adapters, which make more sense.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,606 ✭✭✭djmarkus

Dishonest marketing in my opinion, but you should max out 100MB/s if you have good wiring between the two adapters, which is more than enough for most applications.

This model has Gigabit Ethernet adapters according to this article.

The reviewer still didn't get close to 100Mbps, but he did give it a favourable review in the end.

How can the man on the street tell if its Fast Ethernet or Gigabit?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 865 ✭✭✭kazzer

I see in that review Gadge linked, it has 'gigabit' on the adapters themselves, but it doesn't seem to in the Argos image.

Yeah that's true, I didn't even notice that. It's ridiculous how few tech specs Argos seems to provide on their electronic items.

Seeing as how the reviewer never even got close to 100Mb during his tests, I doubt it matters a great deal in any case.

Would they be of a sufficient speed for smooth HD playback on Netflix etc?

It will help with Netflix playback, but if your internet is the bottle neck at the moment it will still be an issue even with these

We have Fibre, 47Mbps. Our speed isn't a problem. I was just wondering if the adapters are fast enough for some HD streaming as our wireless connection on the router gets somewhat weak when it gets up the stairs and through some walls.

They should work fine for Hd streaming.

Well, I have similarly-specced Trendnet ones and they fire 147 & 162 mbps respectively around the house. Speed at modem is around 20mbps. HD content all viewable with only the most occasional glitch.

Yes, these will work fine. I stream full 1080p HD from my NAS to my media player on these. (I also had no problem with 200Mb ones too)

As for the whole 100MB Eth limit, tthat's assuming you are using a 10/100MB router or device. My NAS (Gigabit) is connected to my router (Gb), the adaptors are connected to my router (Gb) and my media player (Gb) and I regularly get 140-150MB.

These will be more than good enough to stream HD video to a device. They'll also be perfect for Netflix etc.

these will work as long as everything goes back to the one fusebox.
If you have kids a way of testing is if wired baby monitors work in the house.

These are a great way of getting a connection to an external shed.

I would imagine that 100MB will be fine for most users unless you have 100MB plus internet , sure most wifi cards up until recent N standards are 54mbps anyway.
If yo have issues getting wifi upstairs then a set of these and an AP off it is your answer.

I have never used these but would like to know if it's possible to add more than 2 to the setup i.e. have 3 or 4 connecting back to a NAS or Router?

Yep, you sure can, I think you can add up to 4.

I already have an older version of these, could I buy these and would they work with the older version?

For anyone on Vodafone, check with them to see will it be compatible. I'm on fibre and bought a new modem and Vodafone won't give me the setup details to set up the modem, told me nobody on vodafone has ever asked to have a new modem over there existing modem. After been on the phone for about 20 minutes there conclusion was we don't support different modems so you have to use the vodafone modem

Hmm, so with this yoke I can really put away my headless HP Microserver (which is a file server for media and backup) under the stairs or study out of sight and it will still be on the network.

Reserved one while I make up my mind. Thanks OP.

thanks OP, was in the market for a couple of pairs of these - so now I'm sorted and you've saved me some money
    so thanks again :-)

100/10 will struggle with hq 1080, like 30gb + encodes.

Even better plug a cheap Wi-Fi router in to the one upstairs to extend your Wi-Fi access

This isnt a modem so your problem doesnt apply to this product.

These have nothing to do with routers - they'll work with pretty much any router

They just send your network data over the electricity circuit to form a network.

    Work perfectly fine for me.

Housemate bought one of these today. Works great! Have LG Smart TV connected now.

Unfortunately, it doesn't have a Netflix app, and we have updated the software and searched online to no avail. Might be a little too old, 2011 model.

    Really sucks!

    Youtube works at least.

GrumPy, I have a 2012 version LG smart tv which has a Plex client called 'MediaLink'. It works but it's really basic. And they have dropped MediaLink from 2013 onwards as well. There's an effort going on here to write a Plex client LG app:

    HTH!

Are these wired only and is it possible to get WiFi at the second plug.

It's compatible alright. This is just for extending network without cables, the router is a different thing.

I have a wireless access point with 4 port switch on the end of the second powerline adapter. So that means you have 4 wired connections, and another wireless network 'at the other end' (ideal for upstairs where you want good wifi access also)

You can pick up a wireless access point for around €10-15

I have an eIrcom router do I need to tweak the settings to feed an ethernet signal into it and have it transmit wifi?

Thanks for the input kazzer.I have very thick stone walls so my router only reaches a couple of rooms. This set up looks like it might be a solution for further away rooms.
