Please feel free to move if another in another thread or wrong section:

I've a friend who has recently said a he's received a summons in the post for driving without tax, he's adamant he hasn't been pulled & can only explain it being a speed van he drove past has been the cause of this. I've tried looking it up online but haven't found anything concrete. Can speed vans detect this? I'm certain he's just trying to wind me up & succeeding!

Probably a warden that caught him parked on a public street.
I think they usually leave a fine under the wiper but this might not always be the case.

its more than likely that a garda on foot patrol (yes …they do actually walk around - usually only the sunny days)

…anyhow…a Garda on foot patrol obviously spotted the tax was out of date while the car was parked up somewhere …they took the registration number….put details into PULSE and issued a fine to the car owner.

simple question to your friend …did they drive the car while the tax was expired ? and if so , did they park in a public place ?

More likely he drove past a garda car/van with ANPR or he's pulling your leg. AFIK Gosafe vans don't have that ability (at the moment).

The gosafe vans don't have that functionality as it is not in their remit.

ANPR could have gotten him, or more likely imo a traffic warden.

I imagine a traffic corp car with number plate recognition can detect it and may or may not need to stop them.

    Gatso vans don't have ANPR?

Why? Seems like it would make complete sense for them to have it.

I never said that they did or didn't
I said that the go$afe vans don't as it is not in their remit or authority to issue tax fines.

Agree, it makes sense that a gatso van should have them :)

GoSafe and Garda Speed Vans do not currently implement ANPR for the purpose of Motor Tax offenses. Garda Traffic Corp cars do implement ANPR for the purpose of Motor Tax & Insurance. If they capture and issue later, I don't know. I sincerely doubt it. In this instance, its far more likely to be a Garda walking past the car.

    GoSafe only monitor speed.

Garda Speed Vans I would imagine its only a matter of time before they do implement tax & insurance checks. Its common practise in the UK and I'd very much welcome it here.

Anyway, doesn't really matter how a person is caught. If you have no tax, you have no tax, the law is well known and highlighted so you deserve the fine. Simples in my eyes.

it'll probably be part of the contract when the gosafe consortium comtract comes up for renewal
