    Hey guys,

I'm really really confused by the student travel card. I went to the website and it states that I can use the card to commute on dublin bus, train and luas but it also functions as a leap card???

Also, how do I actually use it? Like I asked my friends and checked the website they said to just go up to driver and tell him where I'm going and he'll deduct it from my card but the website states that there are times when I can tap it on the leap card/dublin bus ticket machine thingy too?

Also how do I top it up? Do I go to any newsagent shop?

Sorry for so many questions, its my first time in Dublin.

    Thanks, any help much appreciated.

No need for REAL confusion,ChaosD,just a wee bit will be enough !!!

First thing to remember is that IF you choose the Leap/StudentTravelCard then you effectively have TWO items.
    1.The Student Travel ID
    2.The Leapcard.

Both are integrated in the Card Architecture, but have seperate uses, for example when you wish to use the STC for discounts in retailers or other locations not involving Travel.

What Leapcard is now offering (belatedly) is a new and expanding amount of OPTIONS for Public Transport use and payment.

You can now load a 5 or 30 day Student Rambler onto your Leapcard which offers you non-consecutive days travel for half nuttin when compared to Cash Payers.

Using Leap in rambler mode means you need not go near your pleasant, friendly Busdriver at all, instead simply holding the Card up to the Leap Square on the remote validator.(For Bus use-TAG ON ONLY-DO NOT TAG OFF) .

If you cannot afford the Rambler outlay, then you can continue to use your Leapcard in Purse Mode, which entails communing with the aforementioned Busdriver, stating your destination and he/she will deduct the appropriate Fare.

Even using Leapcard this way,you will still get the benefit of the Daily Cap at the Student Discount Rate which currently limits your DAILY Busfare cost to €5 MAXIMUM. NB: Keep a close eye on Leapcard.ie and Dublinbus.ie over the next few weeks as the Cap situation will be changing to your benefit.

DO remember that the STC ID expires annually, and when it does the Student Element of the Card is then frozen until you renew for the following year...this means that while you can still use the E-Purse element to pay a Fare,it will be at the Standard Leapcard rate with NO Student Discount.

Top Up at any Leapcard/Payzone outlet or LUAS/DART ticket machine or On-Line (With some load collection restrictions,ie: NOT ON BUS) Sounds complicated ...?.....Perhaps,but in operation it works very smoothly indeed...Just keep your ID expiry date in mind and you'll be fine. ;)

    Hi,

Thanks so much for all that information.

I have a student travel card but on the card it states the word leap too. So the student travel card is both a student travel card and a leap card at the same time??

OMG I UNDERSTAND HOW IT WORKS NOW. :D:D:D

THANKS SO MUCH ALEKSMART & MR SIMPSON :D

Last question if I were to travel only for ten minutes on the bus each day, and I don't take the bus everyday (except for when it pours or if I'm carrying heavy things) would it be a better option to get the rambler ticket loaded onto the travel card or use the pay as you go option available?

The 30 day Student Rambler works out and €3.05 per day (and can be used on non consecutive days - it only deducts a day when you tag on), the cap is €5 per day (bus only), or you can buy the standard leap price (usually 25-30c cheaper than cash). Whichever works cheapest for you depending on how much you pay now

The Leap function of the STC are also expected to expire at the end of the year, so it will stop working sometime in January. Procedures are being put in place to transfer balances.

In June, I got m secondary school to stamp my form and I have a blue STC with my details and the name of my secondary school on it, it's still valid and it expires the 31/12/2013. Now in college, I see people with purple ones you get from the Student's Union of your respective college, do they not last for four years, or have I that wrong?

No they last until 31 December of the following year - then you need to get a new one.

No. what if you only spend 1/2/3 years in college?

What has happened is that some colleges are issuing their own college ID s without expiry dates.

The college id and the student travel card are 2 different things. I think you are just getting mixed up with that. What appears to have happened is, you bought a student travel card in june that is intended for people to use from aug/sept 2012 to dec 2013. Its not a rolling 14 months from when you purchased it for it to be valid. Its based on the start of the educational year, which is from aug/sept.

    Hi,

Thanks for all that information!!! It costs me about 1.65 per bus trip once by coins and I've been using the leap card for short distances (costs about 1.40 with the student travel card) and I'm not sure if a bus ticket is cheaper, but I might consider getting a 5 or 7 day rambler loaded onto it.

On a side note, THANKS EVERYONE WHO REPLIED AND HELPED ME! I've successfully managed to use the card both on the bus and the luas :D:D:D
