I need to get a new TV for my folks, they are in Co Tyrone so need to get the channels for the north and the south

I fancy this one on Amazon Sony KDL42w653
    http://www.amazon.co.uk/Sony-KDL42W653-42-inch-WidescreenFreeview-Smart/dp/B00BV6411Q/ref=sr_1_1?s=home-theater&ie=UTF8&qid=1384897104&sr=1-1

I looked it up on the saorview website n it shows a kdl 42w653a (not sure if the a is significant)
I E-mailed Sony for clarification and this is the reply I got

    "Thank you for contacting Sony.
I appreciate your enquiry about whether the tuner of your KDL-42W653A is MPEG4.
In response to your query, the Built-in tuners in your model are:
    DVB-T (digital terrestrial)
    DVB-T2 (digital terrestrial)
    DVB-C (digital cable)
    CI+ ( Analog)
In general, the transmission reception from a country other than where you reside is not guaranteed. "

Can anybody advise me if the TV I link to on Amazon will pick up saorview as well as the North's digital channels?

Any Freeview HD set, such as this one, should receive Saorview.

Well that was a non-answer from Sony, you ask about MPEG-4 and they give you technical jargon back without answering the question.

    This from the manual
Any functions related to Digital TV (DVB) will only
work in countries or areas where DVB-T/DVB-T2
    (MPEG-2 and H.264/MPEG-4 AVC) digital
    terrestrial signals are broadcast

    http://pdf.crse.com/manuals/4453095131.pdf

That TV has an on-board MPEG-4 decoder, most Sony TVs starting 2008 had it. My 2008 Sony V4500 does. The DVB-T2 standard (i.e. FreeviewHD - BBC HD, ITV HD, CH 4 HD) uses MPEG-4 decoding by default. It should have no problems receiving Saorview/Freeview/Freeview HD.

The TV is Saorview approved and Freeview approved.

Cheers everybody that's great help. I was 90% sure but just needed to be as sure as I could be and all the acronyms were confusing me.
Cush you were spot on with the nonanswer from sony. That's exactly how I replied to them thanking them for their non answer and saying I would buy a samsung as they clearly advertise they are saorview ready.

I have the 32" version of this and it gets all the channels no problem.

Also very very easy to re-order the TV channels once it's tuned in - so you can move all the Freeview HD channels to the start where they really should be (1,2,3,4) and the Saorview channels to somewhere close-by too if you want.
