You didn't mention which platform you use. You could try Garmin Fit, which is available on iPhone and Android.

I've a galaxy y. Not had it long and wouldn't be too app savy. Thanks

I use Map my Run for iPhone - the free version.
    Very happy with it

Ive tried a few over past few years but my favourites would be Runkeeper and Endomondo.

The one benefit of the Garmin Fit app, is that if you do ultimately invest in a Garmin watch, then all of your run history will have been stored in the one central location. It is also possible of course to export workouts from Garmin to other app environments, like Endomondo, Strava etc.

I'd imagine it's pretty hard to differentiate between different run apps, but here's some reviews from a quick google: IOS, Mixed, more, and more.

I tried all of these and in the end I purchased a Garmin ForeRunner 210, best purchase ever!
