In our local school there are four classrooms with two classes in each room, the children in each room all do the same Irish English and Maths , at the moment 5th and 6th are doing the sixth class curriculum which is putting a lot of pressure on the 5th class children , later on in the year they will all do the 5th class curriculum, is this common practice in schools

Yes, the curriculum programme for 5th is continued in 6th , for example. Multi-level classes are very common.

In our local school 5th class are doing the 6th class curriculum first and then they will do the 5th class curriculum when its finished which will be from Feb / March onwards

Those that are in 6th would have done it the opposite way last year. It's very common where you have 2 classes together. I was in primary school 30 years ago, and this was how classes were taught!

If you look at the work it really isn't all that different. My 2nd class boy is doing 2nd class spellings this year using a 2nd class book... Most of them are the same spellings he did last year in 1st using the 1st class book.

Edit: he also started this school year doing the same tables as he had done last year +1, +2, +3 etc.
