Hey, I'm currently a student in UCD but I'm not really liking my course and so I'm considering applying through the CAO again.
I was looking at Enterprise Computing in DCU. I really like the idea of working with computers a lot, but I'm wondering if somebody who is doing the course could fill me in on what the maths is like. I don't particularly like maths, I got a C1 at ordinary level in the leaving cert and I know the maths requirement for this course is a C3 at ordinary level, but how difficult is the maths? and is it a major part of the course? Is it used in most modules?
    Thanks:)

Hi, I am currently in 3rd year of EC. Maths has 2 modules so far in the course. The first was a year long first year module that was basic enough in the first semester but got a good bit harder in the second semester. The key to that module is keeping up with lectures and practicing the questions.

In year 2 semester 1 we had a second maths module which was much more complicated. Again dodgy lecturer didn't help but again keeping up with lectures and practicing was the only way to get through that.

They are the only maths modules we have had or will have. So you ain't looking at too much, should be grand as I said if you go to the lectures!!

Just a heads up, but what year are you in your course? You may have to pay fees for DCU depending. If you are currently in your first year in UCD you can see about leaving the course and it may allow you apply next year without paying fees again, although look into this.

If you do the full year in UCD now you will have to pay full fee's for DCU the first year next year (if you are currently in first year in UCD now)

I'm currently in my first year in UCD. I get a grant so I have to find out whether this will effect my grant if I drop out of college before the second semester. As far as I know if I drop out before semester two I will only have to pay fees in DCU for one semester and then I'll get my grant for the rest of the course, however I am not certain about this.

This also affects Tuition fee's, you may have the pay Full Tuition Fee's (€4136) + the contribution (€2,538) on top of it for Enterpise Computing. I think there is a window that if you are not happy with your course you can drop out and it won't affect your Fees + Grant but I would contact the Department of Education or speak to someone in UCD about it.

If you are out of the window you may be liable to pay the Fees + Contribution which could be €6674 for the first year at DCU.

Just letting you know now rather than further down the line. If you do have to pay the full fee's + grant the other option is waiting 5 years and becoming a second chance student where you get fee's free again.

Hi, just in relation to the fees; I spoke with somebody in UCD and they informed me that if I was to drop out of my course now in semester one I would have to pay half of the fees for the first year of another course. So just in relation to Enterprise Computing is the €6674 that you mentioned previously the full fees for the whole year of EC? Because if that were the case I'd have to pay half of that and then I would continue to get my grant.

You'd pay about €2068 in tuition fees for the first semester for Enterprise Computing id say but I would contact SUSI about the grant situation.

I'd ring DCU fee's office however just to clarify the fee's for Enterprise Computing.

Just to give a slightly different viewpoint to the person above. I'm a first year EC student.
Are you willing to put in lots of hours of maths study?
The maths in first year is HARD it's hard from the first week and then gets progressively worse throughout the year, if you've done ordinary you will find it difficult and will need to do lots of hours of study on it outside of lectures.

There were quite a large number either struggling or completely left behind at the mid semester one test.
The text book for the course is Discreet Mathematics by Rob Haggerty, have a look at that for the kind of things things we are learning.
