The car won't start. light comes on when i turn the key which would suggest it is the starters.
I could rull it up the hill and roll down but was just wondering do i leave it in 1st or 2nd when I try to jump start it this way

    What car is it?
    Did start earlier/yesterday?

    But it's probably the battery.

To roll it, roll forward downhill with key in "on" and gear in second. Let it roll a bit and then let clutch up.
Once started drive around for 20 mins, go home and turn car off.
Then try to start it again.

Do the lights on the dashboard dim a lot when you turn the key to start? - If so, it's more than likely the battery. With the weather turning cold, weak batteries which have just managed to survive our long, mild summer, are now prone to failing.

If you turn the key, the dashboard lights only dim very/very slightly, but there is no turn over what so ever, then your guess at the starter might be correct.

In both cases above, kick start as described by biko above will probably get you underway.

If you turn the key, and it is turning over, but not starting, then you are entering a bigger troubleshooting problem. Chances are a kick start might not work, so I really wouldn't try it. You could find yourself at the bottom of a hill with no easy way of getting the car back up!!!

Had the same bother with it last winter as well. fairly sure it is the battery.
I can turn on the lights when I get in the car.
When i turn the key the lights come on and then flicker and it does I want to start. only have a mini hill (20 feet) to roll down so will be no one at the end of it

The battery may well have enough charge to turn lights on but not enough to crank the starter.

    I think we need a sticky :D

you can also bump start in reverse, or just hang around and ask the first randomer to arrive for a quick push
