VW Passat, clutch gone?

My VW passat 2L diesel stopped on the road yesterday. The engine revved up but when you put it in gear it would not move. There was a strong smell of the clutch burning. It had to be taken to the garage by truck. There is 80000 km on the clock. It showed no signs of the clutch going prior to this and was driving fine. I have had a number of passat's and never had a problem. I presume that this means that the clutch is gone. Has anyone had this problem with a passat or any idea what it will cost to fix. Any help would be great.

    DIY >> Main Motors forum.

Tbh, before the cause is diagnosed it's difficult to say how much it will set you back.
Was there any work on clutch/engine before?

There was a valve replaced in it recently. Not sure what its called but its for recycling exhaust fumes. The glow plug light started to come on when you were driving and this would shut down the turbo. Other than than that had no problem with it. As I said there was no sign that the clutch was going. Have no contact from the garage yet but would like to have an idea of what to expect.

The price will depend on where you go (dealer or independent) and also whether or not you get the flywheel replaced at the same time.

For clutch, flywheel and concentric slave cylinder allow about €950 at an independent.

For just clutch kit and concentric without flywheel about €550.
