Hi, just bought a used mountain bike, the high level gears are stuck in 1 and won't go to 2 or 3, is this an easy fix does anyone know and could anyone recommend a decent repair guy in dublin city?

    Thanks!

Do you mean the front chain ring gears won't work or the rear cassette gears?

When you use the shifter, does the derailleur move at all?

There are three components involved in front gear shifting.
    1. Shifter: This is either a twist-grip or a lever shifter. If it's a twist-grip, is it turning? If lever, does the lever move easily? If not, the shifter could be seized up (though this is not so likely) or the cable could be seized. Set the shifter to the highest position.
    2. Derailleur: This moves the chain between chainrings. Can you move it sideways by hand? If not, it needs cleaning and lubrication.
    3. Cable: Is it tight or slack? If the cable is slack when the shifter is in the lowest position it may just need adjusting. Set the shifter to highest. Now pull the bare cable out from the down tube and see does that allow you to get the highest gear. If so, you need to adjust the cable. If the cable won't move in its housing or is rusty looking, it's likely jammed. You might manage to lubricate it but are probably better off replacing it.

When you attempt to change gear does the shifter move? Does the derailleur move in/out? Is the cable connected to the derailleur?

Loosen the tension on the derailleur retaining nut and move the derailleur by hand, if it doesnt move douse it in wd40/GT85 and keep wriggling it in/out till it frees up.
