Children's book featuring Liver Eating?!

This is a longshot, but when I was a small child (in the 80s) I remember reading an illustrated storybook in the school library.

It was a folk-tale, or a story in the style of a folk-tale, about a tribesman who goes on a quest.

He encounters an old woman, or a monster in the form of an old woman, and kills her and eats her liver(!). The liver then makes him extraordinarily thirsty.

Anyway, it's totally bizarre for a children's book, so I've always remembered it, but searching for it has come up with nothing. Any ideas?
